About Johnnie

Johnnie Cochran was born in Shreveport, LA in 1937. He moved to California with his family, where he excelled at school. Cochran graduated with a J.D. from Loyola Law School, and went on to have a distinguished career in criminal law.

Cochran first practiced in Los Angeles, where he was a deputy city attorney. He represented celebrity Lenny Bruce in 1964, then opened his own law firm, called Cochran, Atkins & Evans. Cochran took on several cases defending African Americans, and earned a reputation as a leader in the black community.

Civil rights remained Cochran’s main focus in the public and private spheres. He had the unique ability to represent clients from all walks of life, and successfully defended the richest and the poorest citizens. Cochran won a large settlement for the family of Ron Settles, an African American football player shot and killed by police. He defended O.J. Simpson and acquitted rapper Sean (P. Diddy) Combs from charges of stolen weapons and bribery. In between, Cochran secured a multi-million dollar settlement for Abner Louima, a Haitian immigrant who was a victim of police brutality.
