About Karen
Karen Kendrick Brown's primary practice areas are federal taxation focusing on issues relating to financial transactions involving state and local entities and public finance law. She has worked on transactions to provide financing for working capital, including deficit financing and funding for accrued unfunded pension liabilities, and capital projects such as hospitals, airport facilities, multi-family and single-family housing, improvements owned and used by 501(c) organizations, schools and various governmentally owned facilities including parking garages, water and sewer systems, stadia and entertainment facilities and various other types of public benefits. Ms. Brown provides advice on the formation and operation of charitable organizations and has represented exempt organizations in controversies before the Internal Revenue Service. Joining the Washington, DC office of Lewis & Munday in 1992, she has worked continuously on public finance matters and is the firm's principal tax attorney in this area.
Prior to beginning private practice, she was employed for seven years with the Office of Chief Counsel for the Internal Revenue Service. Ms. Brown was employed as a public finance attorney for several years with another firm before associating with Lewis and Munday. She is a licensed certified public accountant in the State of Maryland, a member of the National Association of Bond Lawyers, the National Bar Association and the American Bar Association. Ms. Brown is licensed to practice in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Michigan.
