Karen M. Lavin graduated with high honors in 1978 from University of Wisconsin in Whitewater with a degree in Women's Studies. She went on to Chicago Kent College of Law, graduating with honors in 1982. She began her law career in the Cook County State's Attorney's office, prosecuting serious crimes, including rape, aggravated battery and attempted murder. She shifted into civil practice in 1986.
