Karen Swopes | Terre Haute Divorce & Family Lawyer

Karen Swopes has been a resident of the Wabash Valley since 1987. She graduated cum laude from Indiana University School of Law, Bloomington, Indiana in 1997, and became a member of the Indiana Bar that same year.

Upon graduation, Karen embarked on a career in trust and finance, administering complex legal and financial issues for trust companies, banks and brokerage houses, and served as the head of a trust department.

Karen opted for some courtroom experience in 2002 and served as Deputy Prosecutor for Child Support in Vigo County, where she routinely appeared at 80 to 100 hearings per week. Due to her thorough preparation and aggressive representation of the State of Indiana in the courtroom, child support collections increased by 9% in the last nine months of Karen's tenure at the Prosecutor's Office, which was double the state average for the same time period.

Karen opened her own law office in 2004, practicing primarily in the area of family law matters. Her experience in estate and trust administration, as well as her courtroom experience in the child support area, translated well into family law, where issues regarding the valuation and division of assets and debts are routinely handled, in addition to the issues of child support, child custody, parenting time and tax planning. Karen is a member in good standing of the Indiana State Bar, and is also a member of the Family Law section of the Bar.

Karen is a Registered Family Law Mediator and currently serves as the President of the Dispute Resolution Center of the Wabash Valley. In her practice, Karen has found that many family law matters are more effectively resolved through the use of mediation. (See more information about mediation under the mediation tab.)

In the past, Karen has served as the President of the Volunteer Action Center, Secretary of the Estate Planning Council of Central Illiana, board member of the United Way of the Wabash Valley, Secretary of the Paris, Illinois Rotary and member of the Terre Haute Rotary.
