Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

Just before Ferguson, Missouri, became national news, I had filed a Fourth Amendment motion on behalf of a client that touched on similar concerns. The judge granted my motion after a hearing was held and arguments were heard. It was just one case, but these constitutional arguments are important in maintaining the integrity of our criminal justice system.

How did you build a successful practice?

A successful law practice depends on calling clients back promptly, listening to their concerns and providing strong advocacy. Do this well and your clients will become your best marketing agents. It also requires healthy internal controls and diligent online presence.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

If you can't find a solid lawyer referral through a trusted friend who has used that lawyer recently, look for an experienced lawyer with great client reviews. When you meet with that lawyer, he or she should be able to explain things in a manner that helps you understand the process rather than leaving you in the dark. Keep looking if you don't feel confident or comfortable about that first meeting.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

One of the most rewarding aspects of my job is exposing a false witness. Nobody wants to see a witness get away with lying. Exposing the truth is a large part of obtaining justice.

Are you involved in your community?

I speak on behalf of The Missouri Bar at continuing legal education seminars, participate as a board member with a local non-profit drug and substance abuse agency called the Phoenix Programs, and volunteer as a judge for area mock trial competitions hosted by area schools and colleges. These volunteer activities (and others) are not only enjoyable, they allow me to give back to the communities that support me and my family.
