Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
While in physical therapy for balance problems, an inattentive therapist negligently allowed an unsupervised exercise that caused our client to fall and shatter her hip. Our 80-year-old client’s husband was in hospice, and she faced her difficult recovery and this case completely alone. We became much more than just her lawyers - we became her family. It was rewarding to mediate this case to a very successful conclusion for her, thanks to a great working relationship with defense counsel and a skillful mediator.
How did you build a successful practice?
One case at a time. Treating every client like they are your only client wins not only their confidence, but they are sure to recommend you to friends and family.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Someone who cares about the client’s problems and has the integrity, experience and an excellent reputation with both clients and other lawyers.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Knowing all of the rules and the courts is the only way to represent a client. Finding out a little-known rule or a local procedure too late in the case can be disastrous.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
The initial phone call tells the lawyer and prospective client alike if they will be a good fit. The facts of the case, the motivations for bringing a case, and the prospective client’s expectations are essential to know from the very first call.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
Understanding the facts of the case is the best place to begin. Effective advocacy starts here.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
Depth of knowledge, experience, and reputation among other lawyers and judges can be part of the initial phone call. The prospective client must know that my integrity is not negotiable.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Righting wrongs and helping clients who have been injured.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Over the years, I have learned a considerable amount of medicine representing clients in malpractice cases. I am part of the faculty for the National Trial Advocacy College, a program dedicated to the hands-on education of lawyers working to refine their advocacy skills. I was among the first lawyers to use an iPad in my law practice and in the courtroom and am always looking for new and innovative technology for case management. I am a dedicated exercise fanatic, love to sail and enjoy the countryside at Virginia wineries.
Are you involved in your community?
As the Vice President of my homeowner’s association, it’s a great opportunity to meet and work with my neighbors. It is also a way to engage with our City’s mayor and council and participate in the long-range plans and goals for our City.
