About Kevin

I practice family law in King County, Washington.

Mostly I think of myself as a trial lawyer. Most of my trial experience comes from my background as a public defender and criminal defense attorney, but I don’t do much criminal defense work any more. My legal practice now is almost entirely family law.

From my point of view, the nice part about having a trial background is that, if I can’t convince the other side to negotiate in good faith, or to offer something close to what we could expect to get if we went to trial (sometimes family law negotiations are driven by emotional considerations as well as legal ones), going to trial is a legitimate way to get things resolved too. That’s not to say that it should be our first choice, but that it isn’t something we should shy away from either.

If you have other needs, go ahead and give me a call. If I don’t have enough experience to handle it myself, I’ll be happy to refer you to another attorney, or, if you prefer, I’ll co-counsel with another attorney so that you have someone you know working on your case.

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

Just recently prevailed in a case involving termination of spousal support. My client had severe physical hardships that meant he couldn't continue to pay the spousal support. Heavily litigated. Decision in our favor saved my client approximately $100,000.00.

How did you build a successful practice?

1 - By listening to my clients. 2 - By keeping my clients informed. 3 - By looking for creative solutions but also being willing to go to trial if/when necessary.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Knowledge, experience, people skills.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Very important. Most family law is done via local rules.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

Services that might be needed, services that I can provide.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Prior to the free phone consultation (30 minutes), I need to do a conflict check, so I ask potential clients to send me their full name, DOB (date of birth), residential address, email address, and telephone number. If the case has already been filed, I need to know the case #, which court it was filed in, and any upcoming deadlines.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Helping my clients when they're not capable of helping themselves.

What are your other interests in addition to law?
