About Alan

Mr. Alan R. Lewis was graduated from Cornell University, College of Arts and Sciences, with a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in Biological Sciences in 1974.  His honor’s research project was published in Photosynthetica.  He was graduated from the SUNY Faculty of Law and Jurisprudence in Buffalo with a Juris Doctor degree in 1978.  While in law school he was appointed to the Moot Court Board; was a place winner in a regional Moot Court Competition at the University of North Carolina; won two local Client Counseling Competitions and participated in the regional competitions in Cleveland and again in Toledo, Ohio; and was awarded the Outstanding Potential Trial Lawyer Award by the Erie County Bar Association.  Mr. Lewis is admitted to practice in the State of New York and in three Federal District Courts, the United States Court of Appeals (Second Circuit), and the Supreme Court of the United States.
 
Mr. Lewis began practicing law as an associate attorney in law firms in Elmira and Newburgh, and became the partner in charge of the litigation department of Rider, Weiner, Lewis and Melchiori, PC.  At that time he was concentrating in insurance and commercial litigation, as well as employment and labor law.  He founded the Law Office of Alan R. Lewis, Esq. in 1987.
 
He has been an Adjunct Professor teaching various law courses at Mount Saint Mary College and the United States Military Academy at West Point (for the graduate program of Long Island University, CW Post).  He has been a frequent guest speaker for various professional organizations as well as a panel member and contributor to several Continuing Legal Education courses sponsored by the NYS Bar Association.  He has been the Moderator of the Judicial Forum sponsored by the National Business Institute (once for “What Civil Court Judges Want You to Know” and again for “As Judges See It: Top Mistakes Attorneys make in Civil Litigation”).  He has served as the presiding judge in the semifinals of the National Mock Trial Competition and has judged Moot Court Competitions at Pace University Law School.  Mr. Lewis is a member of the NYS and Orange County Bar Associations, and a Past-President of both the Greater Newburgh Bar Association and the Mid-Hudson Claims Association.  He  is a Director of the Mid-Hudson Co-Operative Insurance Company (since 1995) and a Director of Claverack Cooperative Insurance Company.
