Thomas K. Herren, born and raised in Lexington, Kentucky, has strong ties and commitments in the Central Kentucky area. Tom is a graduate of the University of Kentucky School of Law. In 1994, Attorney Herren became board certified in civil trial law by the National Board of Legal Specialty Certifications (formerly NBTA), an ABA-accredited organization. The requirements for certification include numerous trials to jury verdict or judgment; continuing legal education; submission of trial court briefs for review; attorney and judicial references; proof of good standing in the legal profession; and a daylong examination on trial techniques, evidence, and ethics. An attorney who has taken the extra time and effort to achieve board certification can be justifiably proud. He has also earned Fellowship in the American College of Trial Lawyers. Fellowship is by invitation only to the top one percent of outstanding trial lawyers who are considered the best in their state. Besides being lead counsel on several significant cases (more fully described below), Tom Herren has been on the Board of Governors of the Kentucky Academy of Trial Attorneys since 1988. He has served as District Vice-President. Kevin A. Osborne is the managing attorney with Ross Mann Personal Injury Lawyers. He is originally from eastern Kentucky and grew up in the town of Paintsville. Following his graduation from high school in 2007, Kevin attended Georgetown College, where he studied History and Political Science. After his graduation from Georgetown College in 2011, Kevin attended the Salmon P. Chase College of Law in Northern Kentucky. While in law school, Kevin clerked for a large regional defense firm in eastern Kentucky, where he gained valuable experience concerning the judicial system. Following law school, and after passing the Bar Examination in 2014, Kevin began his legal career as an associate attorney at the same defense firm he had previously clerked for. Kevin handled cases involving a wide array of subject areas including, but not limited to, governmental defense, sovereign and qualified immunity, medical malpractice defense. Additionally, Kevin represented numerous boards of education during his time in eastern Kentucky. In 2016, Kevin accepted a job with the Kentucky Education and Workforce Development Cabinet in Frankfort, Kentucky. During his time with the Cabinet, Kevin was heavily involved in the Kentucky Work Ready Skills Initiative grant. In 2018, Kevin returned to the private sector and accepted an associate attorney position with a large, regional law firm. In this role, Kevin exclusively represented individuals and families who had been victims of nursing home neglect or medical malpractice. Kevin personally handled hundreds of cases and was pleased to deliver justice for the victims and their families. Working to protect Kentuckyโs most vulnerable citizens and natural landscapes has long been Joeโs personal and professional passion. As an undergraduate student at the University of Kentucky, Joe successfully lobbied for Appalachian studies curricula and the formation of the UK Appalachian Center. As a law student, Joe spent his summers working throughout east Kentucky and central Appalachia with the Appalachian Land Ownership Task Force documenting absentee land and mineral ownership by out of state energy giants. This work inspired the creation of the Kentucky Fair Tax Coalition, which later became Kentuckians for the Commonwealth. Joe started his legal career with the Appalachian Research and Defense Fund (AppalRed) in Jackson, Kentucky, and has now been in private practice for forty years. He represented landowners in some of Kentuckyโs most important mineral and tax litigation, which led to major reforms in property tax of unmined minerals and passage of the Broad Form Deed Amendment to the Kentucky Constitution in 1988. โ From 1988 to 1992, Joe was a partner of Shepherd & Childers, where he practiced with now Franklin Circuit Court Judge Phillip Shepherd. From 2007 to 2011, Joe was a partner in Getty & Childers, a Lexington civil litigation firm. In 2012, Joe started Joe F. Childers & Associates, the predecessor to Childers & Baxter, PLLC. Joe has served on the boards of the Appalachian Citizensโ Law Center, Kentucky State University, Kentucky Employers Mutual Insurance Company, the State Board of Claims, and as Commissioner on the State Mine Safety Review Commission and the Occupational Safety and Health Review Commission. Jane Butcher was born in Martin, Kentucky and attended Margaret Hall School in Versailles, Kentucky. She graduated from Collins High School in West Virginia and went on to attend George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Ms. Butcher graduated with B.A. degrees in political science and philosophy from Eastern Kentucky University. Ms. Butcher received a Masterโs Degree from the University of Kentucky and went on to the prestigious Tulane University School of Law in New Orleans, Louisiana where she received her J.D. degree in 1981. As a student at Tulane University, Ms. Butcher clerked for Hon. J. Bennett Johnston, United States Senator in Washington, D.C. Ms. Butcher returned to Kentucky and began her legal career opening the Butcher Law Office, PLLC in 1983 where she concentrated her legal practice in the area of criminal defense, divorce and family law. She has handled thousands of criminal cases, including death penalty and homicide cases. She has also dedicated her career to representing many clients in their divorce, child custody, and adoption cases. Ms. Butcher was joined in her legal practice by her daughter, Erin Butcher Hjersted in 2002 until 2010 when she left the practice to care for her daughter, Lucinda Jane Hjersted. Mary-Ann Smyth is originally from northwestern Indiana but has lived in Kentucky for the past thirty years. Mary-Ann graduated from Valparaiso University with a degree in criminal justice. She went on to attend Valparaiso University School of Law before joining the United States Air Force, where she was an officer for seven years. During her military career, Mary-Ann served as an attorney in the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Corps and was special assistant U.S. Attorney at Tyndall Air Force Base. She has spent considerable time abroad, most notably at Osan Air Base in South Korea. Following her decorated military career, Mary-Ann developed a successful private practice in Corbin, Kentucky, which quickly became a staple in the local community.
