Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
A client of mine, an individual investment property owner, was sued for $480,000 by a worker who claimed to be her employee. My client denied that the worker was her employee. I undertook her defense, filed some papers in court, and got the case settled for $4,000. My bill was less than the amount of settlement. I believe in effective representation with the least expense for the client and the earliest possible resolution. One of my clients, a small business, was sued by another business owner, who claimed that my client had agreed to purchase the other business and was in breach of contract. My client denied these allegations and asserted that there was no enforceable contract. The case went to trial and my client prevailed. DISCLAIMER: Every case is different, and the outcome of these cases is in no way a guarantee of any kind for any other case.
How did you build a successful practice?
I have worked very hard to build my reputation. The hard work has paid off. Ninety percent of my clients come from word of mouth, out of which a majority consists of my repeat clients, or clients referred to me by my ex-clients. This is the highest accolade anyone can ever give me. The confidence shown to me by my clients is my biggest asset. This is so because I am a smart and honest lawyer. Furthermore, my clients, at any given moment, are fully aware of the status of their case. They are never left wondering about what's happening in their case. I make attorney-client communication a priority.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Clients must look for experience, the lawyer's ability to get to the bottom of an issue and get a problem solved. Potential clients should meet with an attorney before making a decision to retain her or him and get an idea of how the attorney thinks and what is her or his case analysis and strategy. Another important aspect to look for is attorney-client rapport and communication.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
I primarily practice in Alameda, Contra Costa and Santa Clara Superior courts. I know the judges, the local rules and the general courtroom procedures. However, my clients, especially transactional clients come from all over California.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
During the initial phone interview, I mostly ask questions to clarify the issues and understand the case at a macro level. Providing legal advice on the phone, before reviewing pertinent documents and before having a good grip on all the issues from all angles is, I believe, not a good practice. So I rarely provide legal advice on the phone. It is not good for the client and not good for the profession. However, having said that, sometimes, in order to help my clients understand their issue, I do go over general principles of law that may be applicable in their situation. I also provide a general direction to the client even if not a solution. In very rare cases, if I responsibly can, I will give advice over the phone instead of having the client come to my office for a paid consultation.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
I generally want to get a brief overview of the client's situation. I also want to know the names of the parties involved in a transaction or a dispute to make sure that there are no conflicts. I normally ask the clients to email me documents related to the issue prior to meeting me in my office so that I have reviewed the documents before we meet. I charge a flat fee for the initial consultation.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I work across a broad spectrum of cases from transactional matters to litigation. Therefore, I bring the experience of one to another.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Results oriented practice of law.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
My background is in English Literature and Psychology. My hobbies are reading and writing. I have published a fiction novel in my native language, Urdu. I have written another manuscript of an English novel which I am in the process of finalizing. I mostly read historical fiction and history books.
Are you involved in your community?
I am an active member of the Chamber of Commerce of San Ramon. I am also a member of the Contra Costa Bar Association, and a member of the Women's Section of the Contra Costa County Bar Association. I am an adjunct professor of law at Golden Gate University, School of Law.
