About Marc

Marc B. Bergoffen concentrates his practice in the areas of commercial real estate and business transactions and related zoning and land use matters.   Mr. Bergoffen's transaction practice focuses on a variety of real estate matters with an emphasis on the acquisition, disposition, management, leasing and financing of various real estate properties such as office buildings, shopping centers, and apartment complexes.  His transaction experience includes:

 

          Representation of the State Retirement and Pension System of Maryland in connection with its various real estate investment programs;

          Representation of the Maryland Department of Transportation as outside real estate counsel in various joint development projects across the State of Maryland ;

          The acquisition and leasing of a 2.8 million square foot portfolio of office buildings in Rosslyn, Virginia for a national real estate investment trust;

          The acquisition and financing of numerous office buildings, apartment complexes and industrial/warehouse properties throughout the country for a national real estate investment trust;

          The structuring of a joint venture to acquire a portfolio of golf courses in Virginia;

          The negotiating and drafting of commercial leases for the owners of various office properties in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.

 

Additionally, he advises clients on the structuring of real estate transactions to avoid or minimize the payment of transfer and recordation taxes.  Mr. Bergoffen provides value to his clients by offering practical solutions to all aspects of the real estate transaction: from initial due diligence, the negotiation of the purchase contract, title and survey review, loan negotiation, and continuing through the closing and asset management.

 

Mr. Bergoffen is admitted to practice in the State of Maryland, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Virginia and the State of Florida.  He is a member of the Maryland State Bar Association (Real Property, Zoning and Land Use Section) where is a member of the Council Section and the District of Columbia Bar (Real Estate Housing and Land Use Section).  Mr. Bergoffen is also active in the Washington District Council of the Urban Land Institute.

 

Mr. Bergoffen obtained his Bachelor of Arts from Emory University in 1994 and his Juris Doctor with honors from the University of Florida School of Law in 1997 where he received the Book Award for Outstanding Student in Trial Practice.  Following law school, Mr. Bergoffen clerked for the Eighteenth Judicial Circuit Court in Seminole County, Florida.  Prior to joining the firm, Mr. Bergoffen was associated with the Washington, DC office of Goulston & Storrs.
