Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

Domestic: Mother and four children represented versus Father who suddenly thought that abandoning the family in favor of drugs and hookers was a good idea. Depleted checking accounts and was starting to empty a SUBSTANTIAL (60K) 401k savings account. Was able to stop him from bleeding the account as well as getting restitution for my client on past due mortgage payments, car payments etc. that she had made during his ""wilding"". Salvaged 40K for her and the children's benefit. Personal Injury: Very nice older lady who was on Medicaid and Medicare (age and disability). Absolute nightmare dealing with government entities. Only a 15K policy and Medicaid/Medicare had paid almost 17K on medical benefits. Was able to get the gov't to waive all liens except for 1/3 of the liability policy. Client supremely happy.

How did you build a successful practice?

Always keep a personal touch. If a client only sees the attorney at court; then you're not an attorney, you're a paper-pusher. We make a personal connection with our clients and we perform/provide a lot of service for the money paid. Personal recommendations from former clients bear that out.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Someone who doesn't talk over your head. Someone who will actually discuss your concerns with you, someone who you can really communicate with. If you're looking for a "mouthpiece" in a $3,000 dollar suit, that's not me. Substance over appearance; I'd rather do the job right than just look like an attorney.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Very. I don't 'network' with other lawyers, attend parties, or join associations. I don't donate to political campaigns o try to curry favor by smooching up to candidates who are running for judge. I work based on the facts of the case (what really matter on appeal) rahter than trying to "good ol' boy" a case. My experience is that the 'good ol' boy network' is only good at election time. I don't have high profile clients; most folks are working class and their abilityto spread the word about me is limited. A lot of 'good talk' about high priced attorneys is misplaced; people feel they have to justify giving a sharp suit 10 grand for the same work that I do for less.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

Given the appropriate facts I can tell you approximately how long your case will take to completion, the estimated costs (court and attorney fees) as well as the LIKELY outcome. There are no guarantees.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Facts, not opinions. What, where, when, why, who.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

Not a stuffed suit; not a 'better than you, I'm doing you a favor by talking to you' prima donna. I work for a living. I draft the overwhelming majority of my pleadings and every letter, pleading document, note, email to me, is read.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Helping people. it's the reason that I became a lawyer. I tell folks that I wasn't naive enough to be a social worker and that I didn't have the faith to be a priest, that left law.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Hunting, fish, shooting, camping…anything outdoors.

Are you involved in your community?

I volunteer with the Cub Scout pack that my son is in. Teaching outdoor skills to young ones is a pleasure.
