About Martin
Martin is the managing shareholder of Sweeny, Wingate & Barrow's Pee Dee Region office in Hartsville, South Carolina. He joined the firm in 1999, following a two year judicial clerkship under the Honorable Henry M. Herlong, Jr., United States District Judge for the District of South Carolina in Greenville, South Carolina.
Martin received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Clemson University, graduating cum laude in 1994. While at Clemson, Martin was elected President of the Student Body and was a member of Sigma Nu and the Tiger Brotherhood honorary service fraternity. Martin received his Juris Doctorate degree from the University of South Carolina in 1997. While working towards his law degree, Martin served as the Managing Editor of the SOUTH CAROLINA LAW REVIEW and authored two published notes: Constitutional Law: Minister's Pension Contract is an Ecclesiastical Matter -- Not Reviewable by Court, 48 S.C.L.REV. 27 (1996) and South Carolina's Experiment: Legislative Control of Judicial Merit Selection, 49 S.C.L.REV. 1217 (1998). Martin was also active with the law school's student chapter of the Christian Legal Society, serving as its president.
Martin's practice focuses on civil litigation, with an emphasis on defending clients involved in medical malpractice, trucking/transportation, and E.R.I.S.A claims, and he has lectured to attorneys and other legal professionals on these areas. His practice also involves premises liability, products liability, estate planning and probate litigation. Martin is licensed to practice law in both North and South Carolina and is a member of the bar associations of both states. He actively serves on the Health Care Committee of the South Carolina Bar and as a delegate from the Fourth Judicial Circuit to the Young Lawyers' Division. Martin is also a member of the Darlington County Bar Association, the Defense Research Institute and the South Carolina Defense Trial Attorneys Association.
Martin is a native of Hartsville, South Carolina. He is married to Karen West Driggers, also of Hartsville. Martin and Karen have four children: Grace, Scott, West, and Eve. Martin and his family are founding members of the Hartsville Presbyterian Church of Hartsville, South Carolina, When not practicing law, Martin enjoys outdoor activities including hiking, hunting, fishing and his playing his guitar (indoors or out).
