About Matthew
One of the most frustrating aspects of my career has been seeing the effects that the high cost of legal fees have on clients. These costs create a situation where far too many people cannot get the help they need in their case. As a result, people end up trying to navigate a legal system that is not designed to help people without lawyers. Unsurprisingly, the results for unrepresented husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, can be devastating and life-long. More often than not, the system creates huge headaches for lawyers as well, with uncollectable bills and angry (and broke) clients becoming an all too frequent part of the legal field.
When I started my firm, I decided I would try to do things differently. Instead of asking for a large retainer up front to get through half or more of the case, I only ask for a client to pay me for the work that needs to be done at that time. The result is a system where the client never has to come up with an unattainable amount of money. It also means that my clients can call me without wondering how much a quick phone call with their lawyer will cost them. For my part, I have the freedom to select clients I want to work with, not just the ones that can pay the biggest retainers.
My experience comes from over eight years as a paralegal in a divorce law firm (including throughout law school), followed by five years of litigation in both big and small divorce firms. During this time I have participated in countless divorce and custody cases on issues ranging from complex asset allocation and highly contested custody fights, to arguing over Christmas ornaments and family pets. I am a graduate of Gordon College in Wenham, MA, and New England School of Law in Boston, MA, (night student). I am licensed to practice in the state and federal courts in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Maine.
