About Matthew

Matthew G. Moffett is a civil litigation defense attorney, handling cases in both state and federal courts. His legal ability is rated "AV", which is the highest rating afforded to lawyers by their peers.  He is listed among the Georgia Super Lawyers in Atlanta Magazine and has been selected for the Legal Elite listing in Georgia Trend magazine.

 

Mr. Moffett is a Charter Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, an invitation only, honorary society representing less than one half of one percent of American lawyers for effectiveness and accomplishment in litigation and trial work, along with ethical reputation. He was selected as a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates, an organization recognizing lawyers for skill, civility and integrity.  He further was invited to become a member of the Council on Litigation Management, an organization dedicated to the principles and practices of litigation management

 

Mr. Moffett's civil litigation defense practice involves:

 

--Property and casualty claims (premises and products liability, auto and motor carrier).

--Multi-district litigation (defense of toxic tort claims).

--Employment practices litigation (defense of public and private employers).

--Education cases (defense of public school systems and independent schools).

--Insurance coverage (declaratory judgment actions, defense of direct actions).

--Insurance subrogation (product failure).

 

Mr. Moffett serves as panel counsel for many national insurers and third party administrators, working with these insurers and administrators in the evaluation and defense of claims and cases.  He has defended numerous cases at trial and handled appeals at both the state and federal level.  See listing under Representative Cases' section.

 

Mr. Moffett graduated cum laude from the University of Georgia in 1987, and received his law degree from the Emory University School of Law in 1990. Thereafter, and while practicing law, he served for several years as an Adjunct Professor of Law at Emory teaching appellate practice.

 

Mr. Moffett was awarded many honors while in law school, including selection as Best Advocate at the 1989 Georgia Intrastate Moot Court Competition, Winner and Best Advocate at the 1989 and 1990 National Moot Court Competitions, and recipient of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers Litigation Award. He also was selected into membership in the Order of the Barristers and the Emory Moot Court Society, of which he was awarded the Outstanding Member in 1990.

 

Mr. Moffett is the author of "Winning at Moot Court" (Sum and Substance, 1992) and the co-author of "Creation and Existence of Agency Relationship" (Georgia Jurisprudence: Employment and Labor, Lawyer's Cooperative Publishing, 1995). He has authored additional seminar papers and presented legal seminars annually to his clients on a variety of legal topics.

 

Mr. Moffett is a member of the board of directors for the Georgia Defense Lawyers Association.  He also is a member of the board of directors for the Atlanta Claims Association.  He is a Charter Fellow of the Atlanta Bar Foundation.  His other memberships are with the Atlanta Bar Association, State Bar of Georgia, Defense Research Institute and Lawyer's Club of Atlanta.

 

Mr. Moffett was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia . He and his wife Diane have two daughters, Kate and Megan who attend St. Martin's Episcopal School where Matt serves as a trustee. The family attends Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, where Matt has chaired the Administrative Board and now teaches adult Sunday School classes. Matt previously served on the board of directors of Global Health Action, a non-profit organization addressing the world's most pressing health problems, and also on the board of directors for the Silver Lake Civic Association, which manages the preservation of two lakes and a multi acre wilderness area in metro Atlanta.
