Born in Greensboro, North Carolina, Melissa P. Haisten has also lived in South Carolina and in most regions of Georgia. She attended Mercer University in Macon, Georgia where she earned a B.B.A. in Accounting with a minor in Biology, graduating magna cum laude. On scholarship at the University of Georgia School of Law, she earned her J.D. in 2003. She is admitted to practice law with the State Bar of Georgia, the Court of Appeals of the State of Georgia, the Supreme Court of the State of Georgia, the United States District Court, Northern District of Georgia, and the Eleventh Circuit of the United States Court of Appeals. She is also a registered lobbyist with the State of Georgia. Professionally, she is a member of the Cobb County Bar Association, participating in the Younger Lawyers' Division. Her practice areas include: land use and development, zoning law, commercial and residential real estate contracts and litigation, alcohol licensing (local and state), local government law, eminent domain, nonprofit corporations, corporations, real property taxation, and civil litigation.

Past employment experiences include Assistant City Attorney for the City of Acworth and the City of Marietta where she served as the attorney for the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals and Construction Board of Appeals. She has also assisted in representing the Cobb County Board of Tax Assessors. She has always been involved in her community, with numerous activities in college and during her professional career. Currently, she is a member of the Marietta Civitan Club where she has been a Board Member, Vice President, and a founding member of the North Cobb Civitan Club. She also volunteers with The Extension and is in the Cobb County Chamber of Commerce's Leadership Cobb Class of 2009. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends.
