Nat P. Ozmon is the senior member and a founder of Anesi, Ozmon, Rodin, Novak & Kohen, Ltd.  He ranked first in his class when he graduated from Northwestern School of Law.  Throughout the legal profession he is recognized as a leader in personal injury law working tirelessly to protect injured victims.  His foresight and innovative approaches to his clients' cases has resulted in many groundbreaking precedents in this field.

Nat is a pioneer in the laws that provide protection to injured construction workers.  As the firm grew, it took pride in the thousands of construction workers who were successfully helped over the years.  The workman-like approach to legal representation developed generations of outstanding attorneys and this translated into continuity at the Anesi, Ozmon firm.  That meant that many of the present attorneys have now spent their entire careers with the firm.

Nat is a leader of the Bar and has served on the managing boards of the Association of Trial Lawyers of America, the Chicago Bar Association and the Society of Trial Lawyers.  He is a past president of The Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, certified by the American Board of Trial Advocates, a fellow and founder of the Roscoe Pound Foundation, the Trial Lawyers for Public Justice and the Institute for Injury Reduction.

For most of his career, Nat has been a teacher of law.  For over 50 years he has lectured and contributed many articles to legal publications and has been a faculty member of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy, the Court Practice Institute, the Illinois College of Advocacy and an adjunct professor at the Loyola School of Law where he taught trial advocacy.  Many of his students are now prominent practicing members of the trial and appellate Bar, including several members of this firm.

Nat has received numerous honors for his contributions, including:

  • The Association of Trial Lawyers of America for protecting citizens from defective products
  • The Illinois Institute for Continuing Legal Education for extraordinary contributions to continuing legal education
  • The Circuit Court of Cook County for contributions toward case management problems
  • Harvard Law School's study of Naife and Smith where he has been listed in The Best Lawyers in America
  • The Illinois Trial Lawyers Association's Leonard Ring Lifetime Achievement Award for commitment to victims' rights and trial by jury
  • American ORT Foundation Jurisprudence Award for a lifetime of distinguished service to the legal profession
  • The prestigious 2003 Laureate status in the Academy of Illinois Lawyers for his legendary success as a civil litigator

"Since loyalty to your client's interest is always foremost, then every decision or other consideration that is made in the day-to-day practice of law must protect and further your client's interests---always superseding any other interest that many be involved, including your own."

The Ups and Downs of the Program for Voluntarily Reclassifying Your Workers
Whether a worker is properly classified as an employee or as an independent contractor depends upon the facts and circumstances. Generally, the determination is made under common law tests considering the right to control and direct the individual performing services. However, in some factual situations, the determination of the proper worker classification status may not be clear.
The IRS Says I Owe More Tax and We Couldn’t Reach an Agreement. Now What?
When a taxpayer receives a notice from the IRS proposing an additional assessment of tax, the taxpayer can often work administratively with the IRS to resolve the dispute. However, many times, the taxpayer and IRS are not able to come to an agreement. In those instances, there are four different forums which can be utilized to litigate a Federal civil tax case: the United States Tax Court, United States District Courts, the United States Court of Federal Claims, and United States Bankruptcy Courts.
QBI Guidance Issued; Safe Harbor Provided for Real Estate Enterprises
As we detailed in Section 199A: New 20% Pass-Through Deduction1, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 created new Internal Revenue Code §199A-providing a significant tax break to flow-through entities and structures. Subject to certain limitations, many eligible taxpayers (excluding C corporations) may deduct up to 20% of the “qualified business income” (QBI). Significantly, even qualified real estate businesses may benefit from the deduction.2
