What should clients look for in a lawyer?
When looking for an attorney, a potential client should not be afraid to ask questions about the attorney's background. Also, schedule more than a brief consult. Even if you have to pay a consult fee, it's worth it. You'll get more detailed information and get to spend more time than just 10-15 minutes on the phone with them. It is super important that the potential client and attorney both feel that they "fit"-meaning that the potential client feels comfortable with the attorney and personality styles/traits match up well. Neither person wants to be butting heads with one another and as the attorney, we don't want a client to feel as if they can't trust us.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Knowledge of the local system is super important. While there are statewide family court rules in place, many local jurisdictions also have local rules that must be followed. Furthermore, judges are also people. They like certain things done a certain way in their respective courtrooms and sometimes have views on certain issues that could affect the outcome of a case. Having an attorney who is familiar with all of these things is priceless so they can help navigate those nuances.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
In a free 10-15 minute phone consult, a potential client can expect me to ask some basic background questions about their particular situation. Also, I can't give a specific plan of action as I'm not their attorney at that point and ethically I cannot provide specific information that they could rely on moving forward. However, I may give some generalizations of things that could possible and general information on the state of case law, etc. A potential client can also expect me to be straightforward and compassionate.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
When doing a free phone consult, a potential client should be prepared with some basic information. In family law--what kind of issue are you seeking representation for (custody, divorce, child support, etc); know where both parties to the case reside (if at all possible), and be prepared to answer some background questions about your situation. For example, if you're calling me about a divorce, I'm going to want to know if both spouses work (or not), if the martial home is owned or rented, if either or both have retirement accounts, and how much debt we need to deal with. This will be in addition to any possible child custody issues.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most rewarding part of my jobs is helping clients navigate a complex legal system during one of the most emotionally charged and trying time of their lives.
Call to schedule your initial consultation to discuss your potential case today.
