About Ottowa
Attorney Ottowa E. Carter, Jr. is a native of Sardis, Mississippi. He graduated magna cum laude with a degree in mathematics from Jackson State University in 1976. He then worked for AT&T for 10 years as a network analyst, managing networks of computer based systems in Jackson, Mississippi. Later he entered the University of Virginia (UVA) School of Law in Charlottesville, Virginia, from which he received his Juris Doctorate in 1991. During his tenure at UVA, he received the James C. Slaughter Award, the law school faculty’s highest award for members of the third-year class. He was also featured in the law school’s magazine, the UVA Lawyer.
Attorney Carter moved back to Mississippi in 1991 where he worked with several defense firms handling criminal and civil cases, including products liability, medical malpractice, wrongful death, personal injury, civil rights, bad faith insurance, and construction and surety
cases. He opened the law firm of Ottowa E. Carter, Jr., P.A. in 2005, continuing to litigate various civil and criminal cases in State and Federal Courts throughout Mississippi. He has been very successful in procuring jury verdicts and favorable settlements for his clients.
Attorney Carter has participated in various capacities with numerous professional organizations since becoming a member of the Mississippi Bar Association. He has served on the Mississippi State Bar’s Client Security Fund Committee, the Board of Governors of the American Association for Justice, and the Board of Directors of the Young Lawyers of the Mississippi State Bar. He also was a member of the Charles Clark Inns of Court. In 2006, he was a graduate of the Jerry Spence Trial Lawyer’s College. In addition to being a member of the Mississippi Bar Association, he is a member of the Magnolia Bar Association and the Capitol Bar Association.
Attorney Carter has also served in many leadership roles in various social and civic organizations. He is a proud member of the Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated and the NAACP. He served as President of the Clinton Mississippi Branch of the NAACP from 2009 through 2012. He received the Mississippi State Conference’s Fred Banks NAACP Legal Award in 2014 which is awarded annually to the lawyer who best provides exemplary service to the organization’s effort to secure justice and equality for all. He was also recognized for his public service contributions to the community by the Clinton, Mississippi Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. with its Beacons Blaze Award. Additionally, he was recognized as a Leader in Law by the Mississippi Business Journal in 2013.
Attorney Carter currently lives with his wife of over 30 plus years, Marietta, in Clinton, Mississippi, where he is a deacon at Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church. He has two sons, Xavier and Christopher, both of whom are attorneys. He is especially proud of his two grandchildren, CJ and Olivia.
