Attorney Patricia R. Casarez-Lodhi was born and raised in Laredo, Texas, and she speaks both English and Spanish fluently. Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

I handle many types of cases, but Consumer Protection cases are by far some of the most rewarding because my clients are able to see a quick resolution to their problem. I recently had a federal case in which a client sued an on-line college because she was not being given the opportunities that she had been promised when she registered. I was able to settle this case in less than a month, and she was able to get a financial benefit as well as a quick test-taking date.

How did you build a successful practice?

I have had my own practice for approximately 7 years. I have worked at other firms in the past, but I have found that I prefer to work with clients myself rather than have a paralegal or law clerk handle their case. I pride myself in being compassionate and understanding to the needs and the anxiety that clients experience while consulting with an attorney, so I strive to make them feel comfortable in my office.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Hiring an attorney is a very important task that all clients should take seriously. I always tell my potential clients the old adage that states something like "when you buy/get something at a cheap/low price up front, you will always pay more at the end." What I want clients to understand is that yes, there are many attorneys that they can hire, but are they hiring that attorney merely because he/she is all that they can afford at that time? You get what you pay for, and I personally take that very seriously. I enroll in continuing legal education courses and seminars often, and most of these are not required. I like to be well-informed in the current laws that pertain to my clients.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Every jurisdiction handles cases somewhat differently. While I do not claim that I have handled cases in every county in Kentucky or in every immigration court throughout the US, a good attorney is one that follows the local rules and knows where to get questions answered. Preparation is key, and this is something that I am known for.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

In our initial consultation, I will be able to: Listen to your unique immigration (or other legal issue) story/facts; Explain general aspects of the law that pertain to your issue; Discuss the general strategy that I generally employ for similar legal issues; Explain what generally happens in the process; Tell you how long the process generally takes; State the potential legal outcomes that are generally confronted by clients, Discuss if you qualify for any form of relief, and Explain how much it will cost to have this issue taken care of. ** Please note that I will not provide you with specific legal advice during your initial consultation.** I can only provide targeted, specific, and case specific legal advice and services to clients who: 1) have a signed engagement letter with Lodhi Law Office, 2) have paid their initial deposit/retainer fee, and 3) have a fee arrangement signed with this office. Approximately 2 days after your initial consultation, you will be mailed/emailed a quote sheet for the legal services sought. The quote will be valid for a 30 day period. Fees will be higher after the quote period ends. AN ATTORNEY-CLIENT RELATIONSHIP IS NOT CREATED BY THE CONSULTATION. Everything that you share with me is confidential, but only clients that I agree to take-on as clients will be part of the attorney-client relationship.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Depending on the type of case (civil or immigration), I will first hear the client tell his/her story of what happened or is happening, and then I will ask them what they expect from the legal services they are seeking.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

Aside from being a licensed attorney, I have also earned an MBA and am almost done with the coursework for my accounting degree. I enjoy learning and knowing about the topics that I work in, and this is something that benefits my business . I grew up speaking both English and Spanish, so this makes my spanish speaking immigrant clients feel comfortable.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Personally, I like being my own boss and being able to choose which clients I decide to represent. I have a very hands-on approach when running my own office, and I generally do many things that would normally be done by assistants myself.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

I used to be a high school teacher, so education and young adults have always been a passion of mine. I like to encourage our young people to excel and to strive for great things from their lives. I also volunteer time and money to feline TNR programs within our state (Trap, Neuter, Release), especially with the Humane Society Animal League for Life (HSALL) in Richmond, Kentucky.
