About Rachel

Rachel first came to Montana in her teens and immediately felt a great affection for the people of this beautiful state. Since that first visit, she has helped the people who build their lives here by volunteering, mentoring, and being involved in her community.

Rachel began her professional career as an educator, acquiring two Bachelors degrees from Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado and a Masters in English Literature from the University of Montana. After ten years of teaching English, directing theatre, and a career as an award-winning, published author, Rachel transitioned to working in bankruptcy law with her husband, Dan.

Rachel has worked in Missoula bankruptcy law since 2009 and attended law school at the University of Montana, Alexander Blewett III School of Law. She graduated in May 2017 and was admitted to the state and federal bar later that same year.  Rachel focuses her practice on Chapter 7 bankruptcy, Chapter 13 bankruptcy and is expanding her practice to include Chapter 11 Subchapter V.

Besides being a lawyer, Rachel loves being the mother of a son, three daughters, and a daughter-in-law. When Rachel and Dan are not working, they are spending time with family, pets, and friends.

Call today to learn more about my fee structure. In general, my overall approach is that I do not want the strain of paying large legal fees to stand in the way of my clients getting the fresh start or the new beginning they need. I take into consideration a number of details in determining the cost. One detail depends on which chapter the my client files. The other details I consider are the complicated nature of the case, the amount of anticipated legal work, and the income of my client.

Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

I helped one gentleman earlier this year who is a veteran and retired police officer. I was able to help him discharge his debts so that he was able to keep his home and spend more time with his grandchildren. He called me to share the laughter of those grandchildren, as they played at the home he worked so hard to save.

How did you build a successful practice?

I take the extra minute. The extra minute to really listen and see what my clients are needing. I hear about more than just the struggles they are facing and the challenges that make their days extra hard. I also hear about the peace they feel after they have spoken with me. I work diligently with them during the bankruptcy process. I smile with them when they receive their discharge. They then go on and tell their friends and family about me, encouraging them to call me, when they are facing those similar struggles.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

I believe that clients should look for someone who is a good listener and empathetic toward their needs. Clients should look for someone they can trust.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Local knowledge is very important. I am knowledgeable about local court customs and rules; I know and can implement the exemptions the State of Montana has in place to protect the clients I help. I also live here in Montana with you. I care very much that you succeed in achieving your financial fresh start.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

During our free consultation, I will discuss many bankruptcy options with you. I will explain the differences between Chapter 7, Chapter 13, and Chapter 11, and I will describe the benefits of each. There are certain parameters for each Chapter, but there is also a fair amount of choice. I will present each option and help you find a possible solution that will align with your financial goals moving forward. If bankruptcy is not the best option for you, I will provide you with feasible alternatives as well.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

I ask that clients share details of their financial story during these phone calls, so that I am better able to help them answer questions that they have about bankruptcy. I also recommend that clients write down their questions before the phone call to ensure that any questions they have are addressed.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I believe it is that extra minute of care and attention I give. I am patient and kind. I understand the uneasiness, the struggles, and many times the fear my clients experience. I don\'t take for granted these feelings, as I help them navigate the bankruptcy process.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

It is most rewarding to get the phone call months after a case is complete - to hear a prior client cheering because they bought a car, got a new job, moved into a new place, and feel so relieved and happy in not being weighed down by all the debt.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Besides being a lawyer, I am a wife and mother. I practice law with my husband, Dan. We have four children who fill our lives with joy and four pets who keep us busy. I enjoy reading, writing, and exploring Montana.

Are you involved in your community?

I give back to my community as much as I can. I participate in quiet ways - donations to the food bank and contributions to those in need. I love live theatre and volunteer as an usher at Missoula Children\'s Theatre with my husband.
