About Refik
My 30 year legal career began as Assistant State Attorney in Duval County where I prosecuted criminal offenses.
For approximately 20 years thereafter I was a private practitioner in Jacksonville. I started as an associate attorney at the law Offices of Tassone & Ferebee and represented clients in criminal and civil litigation. I then went on to partner of Tassone & Eler, with a focus on complex and major litigation practices in criminal and civil law matters including homicide (Death Penalty), robbery, kidnapping, arson and drug trafficking cases.
In 2006, I launched The Law Offices of Refik W. Eler, P.A., a general practice law firm specializing in similar aspects of criminal and civil litigation in State and Federal Courts. I was appointed as Chief Assistant Public Defender in January of 2009. I was the Chief Assistant Public Defender serving the Fourth Judicial Circuit of Florida from January 2009 until January 2017.
For several years, I was an Adjunct Professor at The Florida Coastal School of Law where I taught trial advocacy including mock trial of criminal and civil cases to second and third year law students. I am a longtime member of the Florida Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and the Jacksonville Bar Association where I sat on the Governmental Relations Committee.
Other past legal memberships included; the Florida Public Defender Association’s Death Penalty Steering Committee and Mental Health Steering Committee and the Fourth Judicial Circuit’s Pro Bono Committee.
Since 2009, I have served as a Board Member for the Sulzbacher Center for the homeless and for five years I also sat on the Board at the Jacksonville Humane Society.

Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I had a family law dissolution case where my client opted for a dissolution to end an abusive marriage. The client wanted the divorce expedited, but was afraid things would drag out for several months and be the subject of potential abuse. We resolved it within 60 days and the client has moved on with life and no more abuse.
How did you build a successful practice?
A successful legal practice comes from being able to relate to the client, be accessible for the client and also providing legal options to resolve a legal matter quickly. My practice is successful because of that formula, and the fact that its not just another case, but my client's life or liberty at stake.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Client's should look for a lawyer who they can relate to, who listens, and has experience. Frankly, experience is a key factor because more than likely an experienced lawyer has faced the same or similar circumstances in a case like the potential client's before.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Local knowledge is a big part of success in a client's case. By local knowledge I'm talking about counsel, the Court and how issues in a case have played out in the past. There are obviously "pro's or con's" in any case and you certainly can't pick and/or choose many of the factors of your case, however you can pick your lawyer based upon his experience and local knowledge. Many of my successes have come from that aspect.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
With a free phone consultation you are able to provide a rough "ball park" estimate of how much a case will cost to litigate. Of course, certain types of case(s) are very unpredictable and a wide range of factors come into play such as the type of case, hourly or flat fee, etc.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
Usually very limited information is initially needed and a free follow-up office consult is often scheduled. The type of case, opposing attorney involved, time frame, ie. has the client been served with a summons and/or are other deadlines involved are some typical questions.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
Experience differentiates me from many other lawyers in the community. During my 31 year career as a local Jacksonville and Northeast Florida trial attorney I have handled a variety of cases from inception thru trial. I have the local knowledge practice and procedure and vigorously fight for my clients rights both in and out of court. I am very accessible to my clients and usually respond to all calls within 24 hours or sooner.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Probably the most rewarding aspect of my job as a trial lawyer is representing someone and helping them navigate through the justice system. It can be a daunting task to go it alone. I try very hard to quote reasonable fees and payment plans for everyone so that they don't ever have to go it alone.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Other than law, my other interests include boating, water sports and sporting events.
Are you involved in your community?
I like to think that I am very active in the community. Specifically I sit on the board of the I.M. Sulzbacher Homeless Center in Jacksonville, Florida and serve on the shelter services committee. I also volunteer with the Jacksonville Humane Society, Jacksonville Animal Care and Control and at various local churches for pro bono legal activities.
