About Richard

I come from a family of attorneys. This includes my father, brother and sister. It’s always been in my blood. I chose the path of criminal defense because I enjoy helping people. I’m always rooting for the underdog. I get a good sense of satisfaction when I actually help somebody - ease their fears and anxiety. When clients work with me, they always tell me they feel better. My legal practice focuses on giving the accused in Colorado a future and restoring their confidence. My clients understand I will fight for them, but I won’t pull any punches when it comes to answering questions about their situations. I work to manage expectations by giving them a point of view on the facts they present. They have their own biases, but I give them the perspective of how they will be perceived in court. An informed client learns they have the power to make decisions for themselves. I just supply them with sound options and legal counsel that will guide them through the process.

Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

A sex assault case where the client was facing 48-life indeterminate sentence. There was a confession. As we slowly uncovered numerous inconsistencies and aggressively defended the case, a misdemeanor offer was made on the morning of trial. A vehicular assault case where the police jumped to conclusions and the blood evidence didn't support the charge.

How did you build a successful practice?

Experience and preparation. Learning from every case and being prepared for the career case to make a difference. I enjoy the challenge of practicing criminal law and enjoy helping people.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

If they can communicate and trust the lawyer. Years of experience is important as well. There is no substitute for experience. The wisdom gained from practice gives credit to the advice given by the counselor at law.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

In some cases it helps to know how things are done but in others it is nice coming in from the outside and shaking things up. It is all about communicating with the jury and being professional with the clerks, judges and district attorneys.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

I can gauge what the charge and likely resolution will be without a lawyer and determine if a lawyer will make a difference. A lawyer is always going to make some difference if it is just to calm the client and make sure there are no surprises.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

The charges, what happened, whether there is a prior criminal history and the explanation of role in the conduct.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

I go the extra mile to get the best result. I don't just settle on the first proposed resolution and I am willing to take a case to trial.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Helping people. I enjoy saving people from jail and often saving their futures.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

Enjoy the outdoors, reading and professional sports.

Are you involved in your community?

I give to the community as I am on a non profit board and actively participate in other community activities.
