If you find that an attorney is uncomfortable with your investigation, that should be a signal to you. Indeed, you have many rights as a client. Here is a list of just a few of them:
- Attorney shall maintain the confidences, and at every peril to himself preserve the secrets, of Client.
- Attorney shall communicate with Client developments in the case, including settlement offers, and promptly respond to inquiries by Client.
- Attorney shall not require or demand sexual relations with Client.
- All contingency contracts and contracts in which it is foreseeable that the total expense to Client will exceed $1,000 shall be in writing.
- Client's funds shall be deposited into a trust account and kept separate from Attorney's funds and upon termination of Attorney's employment, all unearned fees shall be promptly refunded to Client and all Client papers shall be returned to Client.
- Client has the right to file a complaint against Attorney with the State Bar of California with Client's grievance(s) against Attorney.
- Client may file a lawsuit against Attorney if Attorney negligently causes injury to Client.
- Attorney must be an active member of the State Bar of California.
- Attorney shall act competently.
- Attorney shall not reject any case of the defenseless or the oppressed for any consideration personal to him or herself.
