Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I was able to uncover the relationship between the defendants and another corporation they were using to divert money out of state. I am now in the process of proving up the judgments against the defendants who, at least for now, appear to have stopped competing with my client. In another matter, I was brought in to deal with a lender in a large commercial real estate transaction which who was having a great deal of difficulty dealing with the client's existing attorney. I was able to restore the communication and confidence with the lender and the transaction was able to close within a relatively short time after my getting involved. The lender, according to my client, told my client that they were happy that I had been brought in.
How did you build a successful practice?
I believe in client relationships on a personal level. I have had many clients for two or three decades who I believe have remained clients because of the results I have gotten for them and because of my efforts at being available when they need me. I have always believed that being a lawyer is a service business and have operated accordingly. Many of my clients have been referred by other clients. In addition, I have good relationships with a number of lawyers, many of whom were opposing counsel when we first met, who have referred a number of cases to me. I think they continue to do that because I have gotten good results for the clients who were referred and because of the personal service which I have given to those clients.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
I believe there are two principal qualities that a client should look for. First, they should be confident in the lawyer's skill which they can determine by discussing the lawyer's education, experience and the like. Second, they need to be comfortable with the lawyer personally and understand how he or she approaches the service aspect of the profession. A client needs to kept informed to feel important and to understand their situation. A client is entitled to both. If a client has difficulty reaching the lawyer or has to wait more than a day to get a call back, perhaps the client should look for someone else.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I have almost 40 years of experience in business and litigation matters. Because of the broad nature of my practice, I believe that my business knowledge supports my litigation matters and vice versa. The understanding which both sides of my practice affords me in assessing the risks and rewards of a particular action, I believe gives me an edge in most business and litigation situations. As a result, I have a very good track record in litigation matters and have never had any contract or other transactional matter challenged by anyone.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Getting a good result for a client, whether in a transactional matter or a lawsuit. My goal is always to look out for the best interests of my clients and to be fair and understanding in how I deal with them. When a client expresses their gratitude for what I have done for them, I think that is hugely rewarding.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
I am a huge history and science buff. I am particularly interest in World War II and astrophysics. I also love watching my youngest daughter pitch softball games and my older daughter compete in horse shows. I love travelling when I get the chance which, unfortunately, isn't as often as I would like.
