About Sarah
Before opening Barron Law Firm in 2012, I worked in a number of other positions: Associate Attorney at Pearson, Christensen, and Clapp in Grand Forks, North Dakota; Clinical Instructor and Visiting Professor in the Clinical Education Program at the University of North Dakota School of Law; Staff Attorney for the Northeast Central Judicial District in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and Assistant Polk County (Minnesota) Attorney.
Prior to becoming a lawyer, I taught English at Illinois State University, Ohio State University, and Cleveland State University. I received a Ph. D. In English Literature from The Ohio State University in 1982 and a B.A. in Literature from Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio in 1975.
I am a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar Association of North Dakota, the Minnesota State Bar Association, the Greater Grand Forks County Bar Association, and the Randy H. Lee American Inn of Court. I currently serve as a member of the Disciplinary Board of the Supreme Court of North Dakota. Previously I served as President of the Randy H. Lee American Inn of Court, Secretary/Treasurer and Vice President of the Women Lawyers Section of the State Bar Association of North Dakota, and Chair of the Inquiry Committee Northeast of the Supreme Court of North Dakota.
I am married to John Madden, an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at the University of North Dakota. I have two adult children and one grandson. In my spare time I enjoy reading, audiobooks, music, and petting my cats and walking my dog.

Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I successfully petitioned for an expedited order from the State of North Dakota to return a child to his father in the state of Montana. I helped a mother in one case and a father in another case modify the visitation provisions of their divorce judgments to ensure the safety of their children. I helped establish paternity for a child whose presumed father had abandoned him. I successfully defended a frivolous motion to vacate a child support judgment.
How did you build a successful practice?
I think working hard and maintaining an excellent reputation are the best ways to build a successful practice. If you work very hard on each case to establish the best outcome for your client, the client will refer other clients to you. If you maintain a professional reputation for being ethical and cooperative, other attorneys will refer cases to you.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Clients should look for a lawyer who will listen to the client, who is knowledgeable about the law, who will provide the client with candid advice, who will communicate regularly with the client about the status of the client's case, and who will advocate vigorously but fairly for the client.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
It is very important for an attorney to understand the local culture and to have knowledge of the judges who may be hearing the client's case.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
I do not provide free phone consultations. My receptionist will provide information about the types of cases I take and my fees and if the potential client is interested in a consultation, my receptionist will ask for the potential client's name, address, and contact information and the name of the opposing party. I charge $100 for an initial consultation which must be paid via cash or credit card prior to the consultation. If a potential client decides to retain me, I credit the $100 consultation fee to the client's first invoice.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I am a solo attorney with a relatively small practice so I have time to provide clients with individualized attention. I answer questions via email or phone promptly, usually the same day. I keep clients informed about the status of their cases. I charge reasonable fees. I have an excellent reputation with the judges in the town where I practice and a good working relationship with other attorneys in my community. I am very good at legal research and writing briefs and I take the time to find the law needed to make convincing legal arguments. I live on the border with Minnesota and am licensed in North Dakota and Minnesota. I am knowledgeable about interstate custody jurisdictional issues and have litigated quite a few of these cases. I live near an Airforce base and have experience with military divorces. I provide limited representation (unbundled legal services) in appropriate cases.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
I like helping people and I enjoy solving problems for clients. I also enjoy successfully negotiating settlements for cases and if litigation is necessary, winning motions and trials.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Reading, listening to audiobooks, walking my dog, spending time with my grandson.
Are you involved in your community?
Currently, I am a member of the Greater Grand Forks Women's Leadership Cooperative, the Greater Grand Forks County Bar Association, and the Randy H. Lee American Inn of Court. I also serve on the Disciplinary Board of the North Dakota Supreme Court. I am a supporter of and former member of the Board of Directors of the Northern Valley Youth Orchestras.
