About Stephen

Stephen S. Newland obtained his undergraduate degree in political science from the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. Steve then went on to receive his law degree from DePaul University in Chicago, excelling in law school as a recipient of the Dean's Scholarship Award for Academic Excellence. Steve was employed at one of the largest and most prestigious personal injury law firms in the nation where he worked on multimillion dollar high publicity cases such as the Tylenol poisonings and major aviation disasters. While working on high profile injury cases, Steve also provided legal representation to those unable to afford an attorney through the DePaul Legal Aid Clinic.

Since opening the firm’s Libertyville office in 1993 Steve’s practice has grown tremendously.  Steve is considered an authority by many in the field of bankruptcy, foreclosure defense, and real estate.

Recently Steve was a featured speaker at the annual Lake County Bar Association’s Real Estate Committee seminar and spoke on the topic of “What Every Real Estate Lawyer Needs to Know about Bankruptcy”.  Also Steve and his bankruptcy practice was recently featured on the front page on the Northwest Herald on a story the paper did on bankruptcy.  Steve has also volunteered his services to the foreclosure court help desk at the courthouse to assist individuals who are facing foreclosure.

Due to Steve's expertise in foreclosure defense he is often asked to speak to fellow attorneys at bar association seminars to instruct other lawyers on how to assist their clients in foreclosure defense.  Steve has recently spoke at the Lake County Bar Association monthly real estate meeting as a featured speaker on the topic of "How to Obtain a Loan Modification by using a Foreclosure Defense."  He also was a featured speaker at the Northwest Suburban Bar Association Seminar on the topic of "Affirmative Defenses in Foreclosure Defense".

In foreclosure defense cases, Steve has been successful in getting lenders to provide people loan modifications where the lenders were previously unwilling to provide modifications.  Steve has also succeeded in getting people back their homes even after the banks have taken the homes through foreclosure sales.

In addition to Steve’s large bankruptcy, foreclosure defense and real estate practice; Steve also practices in estate planning, workers’ compensation and personal injury.

Steve is available to meet with clients in any of the firm’s office locations.
