Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
Made a big difference in a case by thorough investigation followed by intense cross examination of defense witnesses. At first blush it appeared that this defendant was not responsible for the major motor vehicle crash in which our six year old client was seriously injured. Investigation revealed the defendant driver had an opportunity to avoid oncoming vehicle. Driver denied same but through thorough cross examination it was established that his testimony conflicted with the physical evidence we uncovered and the driver had no reasonable answers when confronted with same. The jury appreciated this and held the driver responsible for the collision.
How did you build a successful practice?
My practice was built on hard work, tenacious representation of my client, respect for my clients and their needs, honesty, returning telephone calls and my reputation in the profession for those qualities.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Clients should look for a lawyer with experience in the field involved, the results had in prior cases, the manner in which the attorney speaks to them and the rapport developed, or not, at the initial meeting, the presence of the attorney and the quality of the office support behind the lawyer.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Local knowledge of our reputation by our adversaries accrues to the benefit of our clients.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
In a free telephone consultation we can provide a pretty good picture of whether or not an office consultation would be fruitful. We can generally evaluate the liability situation and advise the caller of the elements required to establish liability. We can generally determine if the damages warrant the involvement of our firm in the matter. The caller will be informed of the issues we consider in making arriving at our opinions.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
In order to evaluate a matter during a free telephone conversation the caller should be prepared to provide the particulars of the event giving rise to their call and if documentation is available they should have it. They should be able to describe their injuries and damages.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
We are different because each step of the case is handled by a partner with years of experience in these matters, because we respect our clients and appreciate they are coming to us following a traumatic event/loss, because we talk understandably so that the client is knowingly involved in decision making, because we care, because we know that the client has entrusted to us a matter of great importance to them which effects their future wellbeing.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most rewarding aspect of my job is when I can ease the burden inflicted upon my client. My clients are significantly injured, require medical and rehabilitation care, either cannot work or cannot work in their prior capacity, have continuing pain and disability. I cannot cure them of the pain and disability, but if I achieve a result that provides the funds for the care required, replaces the earnings lost, or returns their sense of self respect, then I feel I have done the best I could to restore them to the life they previously enjoyed. Their thanks is my reward.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
My interests include baseball, football, bicycle riding and tinkering with home repair projects.
Are you involved in your community?
My community involvement includes being a trustee of the Sands Point Civic Association, Chair of the Queens County Bar Association Administration of Justice Committee and lecturer in the continuing legal education program for St. John's University School of Law.
