About Ted

Ted Lyon was born and raised in Terrell, Texas. His undergraduate degree is in political science that he obtained from East Texas State University (now known as Texas A&M Commerce). Prior to law school, Ted married his high school sweetheart, Donna. While working as a police officer, he put himself through undergraduate school and then went to Southern Methodist University School of Law. Over the past 41 years, Ted has represented clients in over 150 jury trials.

Ted has over 41 years’ experience representing clients in complex litigation, involving personal injury, wrongful death, products liability, and business disputes. He has received verdicts that were ranked in the top ten in the nation on three occasions. He has been interviewed and featured by national and local media outlets, including Good Morning America, 60 Minutes II, NBC Dateline, Texas Lawyer, Dallas Observer, The National Law Journal, D Magazine, and Texas Monthly. Ted specializes in complex litigation. Ted has repeatedly (2003 through 2018) been named to the Super Lawyer List by Texas Monthly, and was named one of the top 100 Lawyers in America by American Trial Lawyers Association consecutively since 2007.

Unprecedented Verdicts

In 1999 Ted and his firm attained a $296 million verdict, Texas county awarded $296 million in compensatory damages to the father of 17 year old girl who died when a butane pipeline on her neighborhood exploded, engulfing her and her friend in a fireball that burned for 38 hours. Smalley v. Knoch was ranked #5 on the top ten verdicts for 1999. In 2013, Ted and his firm, along with Riggs, Abney, Neal, Turpen from Oklahoma attained a $27 million verdict against Enterprise Products Operating, LLC and Enterprise Texas Pipeline, LLC. The case stemmed from a massive, fatal explosion on Enterprise’s North Texas 36 Pipeline in June of 2010. This is the largest verdict in Oklahoma in 2013 or 2012. In 2011, Ted and his firm, along with Zeal Fitts from Houston attained an $18.5 million verdict against Greyhound for clients who were injured when Greyhound’s bus driver rolled a bus in icy conditions on the interstate. The verdict was the largest verdict in U.S. history against Greyhound, and largest verdict in Dallas County in 2011. In 2009, Ted won the largest products liability verdict in Texas Wiles v. Ford and in 2008 his verdict in Waltrip v. U-Haul International of $84,000,000 was the largest personal injury verdict in Texas and fifth largest civil verdict in the United States. In 2010 Ted argued the appeal in Waltrip v. U-Haul International which was the largest judgement ($39,000,000) upheld by the Dallas Court of Appeals in over 20 years.
