About Tom
As the Managing Attorney with the firm of Waldman Smallwood I enjoy practicing in the areas of personal injury, civil rights, and immigration.
I was born July 7, 1956 at Travis Air Force Base in California. My family soon moved to Roy, Utah, a small community at the foot of the Rocky Mountains where I spent my formative years. After my father retired from the Air Force, we returned to our roots in Texas. I graduated from L.D. Bell High School in Hurst, Texas, received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Texas in 1979 and my Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the University of Houston College of Law in 1982.
My beautiful wife Elsa and I reside near Fannett, TX. I have five wonderful children, Brett, Ryan, Samantha, Joshua and Emma. Much of my personal time is spent working with my children.
I chose to practice law because of the ability of our legal system to equalize the playing field between those with great power and influence and those without. Remembering those goals, I had the pleasure of managing a nonprofit legal aid office for ten years where I represented low income Texans in a wide variety of civil legal matters. I continue to keep that goal in mind in my position as the managing attorney with the firm of Waldman Smallwood as we represent injured parties in their disputes with the insurance industry and others.
I am licensed to practice before the State Courts of Texas, United States District Courts for the Eastern and Southern Districts of Texas, and United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit. I am a member of the State Bar College and the Texas Trial Lawyer Association. In addition to significant work at the trial court level I have had the pleasure of successfully representing clients before both the Fifth Circuit in New Orleans and the Texas Supreme Court.
Past Candidate for Chief Justice of the Texas Supreme Court I continue to be politically active. I also support the rights of the less fortunate to full access to the courts. I participate in the Jefferson County Pro Bono Program and am the supervising attorney for the local Catholic Charities Immigration Project.
Both the Firm and I look forward to many years of successfully representing good people injured by the wrongful acts of others.
