Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I represented an elderly veteran who was having a hard time making ends meet. Initially, he seemed like he had a small case, but I aggressively worked his case and was successful in getting him a six figure settlement. He told me he was going to use the money to do foundation repairs on his house because his foundation problems are so bad he is unable to close many doors in his house. There is no greater professional achievement than to make a difference in the lives of my clients and helping them in their time of need.
How did you build a successful practice?
I do not compete with the tv lawyers by spending millions of dollars a year on advertising. I do not get involved in politics or join other institutions to try and solicit work by kissing up or engaging in good ole boy politics. My practice is strictly word of mouth. I am fortunate enough to have incredibly loyal clients that return to me time and time again with all their legal needs and that consistently refer friends and family.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Honesty. Beware any lawyer that tells you the first time you meet with him or her how much money he or she is going to get you. A lawyer should only discuss the evaluation of your case after you finish treating in most cases. Also, ask your lawyer if he or she has ever taken home more $ than his or her clients. I have NEVER taken home more $ than my clients, and I NEVER will. Next, can you get your lawyer on the phone? Ask yourself how much your lawyer really cares about your case if you can NEVER get your lawyer to call you back. My clients have my personal cell phone and are told they can text me when they need something. I personally communicate with my clients from the moment I take their case until the moment I complete my representation. Finally, what is the lawyer's reputation based on what his or her clients have written? Search the online reviews of your lawyer at every site you can think of. Search the name of the lawyer you are considering hiring for prior disciplinary action at ladb.org. If the lawyer has been in trouble with the bar, you should consider if that lawyer is the right lawyer for you.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Absolutely crucial. Each judge has his own perspective and approach to the law. A local lawyer will know about a tendencies and temperament of the assigned judge. A local lawyer will have connections to the local legal community. You usually do not have to worry about getting an unlevel playing field with a local lawyer. Call me, and I will explain. Time and time again I have seen out of town lawyers get "home cooked."
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
Fees, basic assessment as to whether I can meet with the client and take their case, information of what to do before the client meets with me and what documents to bring to the first meeting.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
Each case is different. I need basic facts and background information about the client. Generally speaking, the more information a client can provide, the better. Not all cases are appropriate for a phone consultation.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
First, you get the complete honesty with me. No fluff. No puffing. No evasive responses. I am direct as possible with my clients. Second, I do not ever take home more money than my clients. I have seen attorneys take home a pile of money in a settlement while the seriously injured client gets hardly any money. I was not hurt so why should I take home more money than my client? Third, I communicate with my clients. My clients have my personal cell phone. Do you have the personal cell phone number of your family doctor? I strive to keep my client involved at every stage of their case.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
I enjoy seeing the results of my hard word that make a big difference in improving the lives of my clients.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
Who has time for "other interests?" "Not me," said the flea; "not I," said the fly.
Are you involved in your community?
I try to avoid politics, but I often take on pro bono cases where the "big guy" with money is trying to run over the "little guy" with little or no money.
