Prior to his joining Emery Reddy, PC, James served as counsel to a marketing firm in the financial space and as ethics counsel to a law firm. Earlier, he held a post within the Utah Attorney General’s Office, where he practiced in the Criminal and Civil Appeals divisions and regularly presented oral argument before the Utah Court of Appeals and the Utah Supreme Court. In addition, he argued routinely before the Federal District Court of Utah and argued before the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. His responsibilities also included representing the State of Utah in habeas corpus and post-conviction litigation in both state and federal courts. In his capacity as legislative counsel, James drafted the state’s original open records statute and contributed to the development of court rules and statutory frameworks governing post-conviction remedies.
