Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
All of my cases make a difference in the lives of the people involved. In the last two years, I settled a Davis-Bacon debarment threat against an engineering firm, advised a municipality in reorganizing its fire and rescue services, settled a million dollar plaintiff's wrongful death case, and advised a bank's HR department in navigating personnel issues.
How did you build a successful practice?
I moved to Lincoln fresh out of school and not knowing a soul in Nebraska. I built my firm from scratch based on old breed values of hard work, honesty and quality. Ten years ago I left my firm to re-start a smaller practice because I missed my early days of close contact with my clients. I've stayed small because I like my clients and I'm in complete control of and responsible for services to them.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
This is not complicated - expertise, commitment, compatibility and value, in that order.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Critical. Lincoln is a small city and Nebraska is a huge state with few people. The culture here is unique to western pioneer states. It took me years to understand it fully. One cannot practice effectively here without knowing it and living it.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
A quick assessment of whether someone needs to talk further with me and some preliminary advice on what to do or not in the meantime.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
Each matter is different. As I listen, I ask more questions to hone in on issues. Sometimes the caller has to call back after getting information I've asked for.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
My firm and I are AV rated - the highest rating for legal ability and ethical standards awarded by the oldest rating service in America - Martindale Hubbell. So are 10% of the other firms in Nebraska. At the highest levels of quality and integrity, the products offered by law firms and lawyers are very similar. How am I different? Service, service and service. If you call my firm, you get me and not a receptionist trained in screening callers. I give you my cell phone number. There's no back door to my office.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
I make a good living helping people and businesses get rid of the vexatious legal issues which can be such a hindrance to doing what needs to be done.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
My family (of course); writing creative nonfiction; BMW motorcycles; backpacking the Appalachian Trail; canoeing fast running rivers with some of the best guys; collecting shoes (I know - weird, huh? I'm new to it); Southern, particularly Blue Ridge Mountain, culture (especially food. And music)
Are you involved in your community?
Yes - church, Boy Scouts, Alcoholics Anonymous, my motorcycle club, arts and conservation groups.
