What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Clients should look for a lawyer that will really listen to them to fully understand their legal problem and to be able to give them accurate and sound legal advice that is tailored to their individual situation. No two cases are identical and a caring and concerned attorney will take the time to resolve their legal issues based on their facts and the law. Also, clients should ask their attorney how many years he or she has been practicing in that particular area of law; and, they should ask if the attorney obtains any continuing legal education to stay abreast of the law changes that happen quite frequently.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
An attorney’s local knowledge is very important to the success of a client’s case because each Court and/or Judge could have its own set of rules and procedural requirements. An attorney that knows these rules and procedures will help the client’s case by saving both time and money. The attorney will be able to complete the legal work correctly the first time. If the attorney has to re-do the paperwork, the attorney may be charging the client for the attorney’s mistake. Also, if something is not filed correctly in that local court, the client’s case could be harmed (case could be dismissed or the paperwork could be stricken from the record). This could lead to no legal protection for the client.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
My most rewarding aspect of my job is knowing that I am helping someone resolve their legal issues, which also sometimes translates into helping that person’s overall well-being. I get many thank-you’s and hugs from clients after helping resolve their legal matter. Because I take care of my clients and am concerned about them, they refer many people to me. If fact, referrals have been my number one source of new clients over the years.
