Questions & Answers

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.

About 6 months ago, I had a bankruptcy client whose bank account was levied for about $8,000. The day it happened, she received a letter from her bank that her account was frozen and a check would be issued to the Sheriff's department. There was no way for her to get access to those funds. When she came to see me she was devastated because it had taken her ""forever"" to save that amount and she thought she had lost that money indefinitely. However, because the levy took place within 90 days of her bankruptcy case being filed, the funds were still part of her bankruptcy estate and the creditor was required to release the money back to her. She received the $8,000 back and was so thankful for our services. It was rewarding to me to help someone erase all their debt and get their lifelong savings back.

How did you build a successful practice?

Reputation with the community has been a big part of building a successful bankruptcy practice. I have found that quality work and realistic expectations yield client satisfaction, and client satisfaction is our number 1 goal. Without our clients we would not have a successful practice.

What should clients look for in a lawyer?

Experience, honesty, and sympathy.

How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?

Very important. It is imperative that a bankruptcy attorney knows the local rules. Each District and each Judge have their own rules. Knowing the local rules helps client's understand what they can expect with their case, whether it be a chapter 7 bankruptcy or a chapter 13 bankruptcy. It is also important for a bankruptcy attorney to have experience with the local bankruptcy trustees. Each bankruptcy trustee has their own personality and looks for particular things. Some trustees look more at income while others may look more at assets. It is good for your attorney to know the nuances of your bankruptcy trustee before going to the trustee meeting.

What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?

Determining whether bankruptcy is a good choice and whether one qualifies for a chapter 7 bankruptcy or a chapter 13 bankruptcy or whether that person would be best fit to not file a bankruptcy and instead do a debt settlement or loan consolidation.

What information do you need in a free phone consultation?

Income, expenses, assets, and debts.

What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?

Our firm is very client-focused. We respond to our clients in the same day either by email or phone. We also provide free consultations with an actual experienced bankruptcy attorney. We do not use paralegals or assistants for our consultations.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?

Helping people save more money for necessary expenses. Instead of wasting money on credit card interest rates, my clients end up having more money each month to spend on clothing, food, household items, and other necessary expenses.

What are your other interests in addition to law?

I enjoy running, soccer, and spending time with my family.

Are you involved in your community?

We participate at bankruptcy clinics in San Diego and Orange County. We help support local events, such as the Ocean Festival in San Clemente, CA. We donate our time and offer free legal services throughout the year to those that are homeless or in dire circumstances.
