About Alan
Alan Kansas was born in New Orleans and is a 1988 graduate of Benjamin Franklin High School. In 1991, he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in History. Alan received his J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center in 1994, where he earned cum laude honors and served as Associate Editor of the Houston Law Review.
After law school, Alan was an associate at the law firm of Baker & Botts, L.L.P. in Houston, Texas. At Baker & Botts, Alan's practice focused almost exclusively on representing management in Labor and Employment Law. This included cases involving discrimination on the basis of race, sex, age and disability, overtime violations and whistleblower retaliation. He represented large corporations in mediation, arbitration, trial and appeal. While in Houston, Alan also served on the Board of Directors of the Texas Associations of Business and Chambers of Commerce and provided informative seminars for members on employment law compliance. Alan also presented numerous employment law seminars for human resources specialists.
Alan returned to New Orleans in 2001 to take a position as Special Counsel in the Labor and Employment Law Section at Jones, Walker, Waechter, Poitevent, Carrere, and Denegre, L.L.P. At Jones Walker, Alan continued to represent management in a variety in labor and employment matters. He also served as an Associate Editor for the Louisiana Employment Law Letter and continued to present employment law seminars for firm clients and Lorman Educational Services.
In November 2003, Alan embarked on a new path taking the knowledge and experience gained in nine years as a lawyer for management and putting it to work for the benefit of paycheck earning employees. Alan has successfully handled cases involving overtime violations, wage non-payment, Family and Medical Leave Act, hostile working environment, and whistle blower retaliation. Alan encourages employees to learn about the law and take practical measures to protect themselves against legal violations. Giving well meaning employers every opportunity to do right, while building a solid case to present in court when they don't.
Alan is admitted to practice in Louisiana and Texas. He is a member of the Louisiana and Texas Bar Associations, the New Orleans Bar Association, and the Jefferson Bar Association. He is admitted to practice in the United States Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States District Courts for the Eastern, Middle, and Western Districts of Louisiana, and the Southern and Eastern Districts of Texas.
