Please describe a case(s) in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I recently represented a gentleman who had been charged with attempted murder with a knife. He was in his 60s and had considerable health problems. The incident took place at a club that he owned. One of the patrons got out of control and had to be removed by the security staff. This patron had been striking various individuals and was dangerous. In removing the patron, someone cut him pretty badly with a box cutter. The patron who had been cut alleged that my client was the one that did the stabbing. My client was charged with the crime along with one of the security staff. My office did a detailed investigation and concluded that my client was not involved in any way in the stabbing of the patron. I prepared a letter along with supporting evidence to show the prosecutor that my client could not have been the individual who stabbed the patron. The prosecutor then dismissed all charges against my client and we expunged his record.
How did you build a successful practice?
I build a successful practice by treating each and every client with respect and dignity. I take the time to listen to each client and I make sure to explain in great detail everything they need to know about their case and the process. I make sure to call my clients back very quickly. Almost all calls are returned within 15 minutes. If I am in court and unable to return a call I will send a text to the client and let them know I will call when court is over. I also built a reputation as an attorney that gets great results. It is a combination of top level results and unmatched client service that has made my practice a success.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Clients should look for a lawyer that gets great results. I suggest hiring an attorney that concentrates his or her practice in one area. For example, if you need a criminal defense lawyer, you should hire a criminal defense lawyer. I see clients make the mistake of using their "family lawyer" for serious criminal cases. That is a bad idea in my opinion. As a criminal defense attorney, that is all I do. I won't write a will or handle a real estate closing. Criminal work is all I focus on. You also want to make sure they lawyer you hire is one that you feel comfortable with. A good lawyer cannot help you if you do not trust the lawyer or get along well with the attorney.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
I think local knowledge of the courts, judges, prosecutors and general landscape is critical to success in court. It is important for example in advising a client whether to accept an offer to first know whether such an offer is fair in the particular jurisdiction. I practice almost entirely in Cook County. That is where I know the players and the players know me. I believe it matters. This is why I generally turn down cases outside of Cook County. If someone calls me for a case in DuPage County for example I will suggest a local lawyer for the individual to call.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
My free phone consultations are very detailed. They are often 30-60 minutes in length. I feel it is important to listen completely to the client's recollection of the events leading to the arrest. Only then can I help the client understand what lies ahead. Clients appreciate that after speaking with me they better understand what they are facing and how best to proceed. I always give an honest assessment of their situation. In most cases, the reality is not as bad as the potential client believes from having read stories and articles on the internet. I am able to offer a more realistic scenario for the client and that typically puts them at some ease.
