Depending on the type of case, we offer two options for attorneys fees: 1. Contingency Fees: this option is typical for a personal injury claim. Oftentimes, clients cannot afford attorneys fees, so this option takes that into account. The way it works is this - you dont pay anything up front or monthly. We only get paid if we collect for your case. In that case, we take a percentage, usually 33%, of the overall settlement as our fee, which is dictated by court rules. 2. Hourly: we charge hourly for certain matters. Each attorney has a different rate depending on experience and expertise.

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
In 2013, our firm handled a personal injury claim involving a slip and fall outside of a business after a snow storm. The owner of the property had failed to remove the snow between his entrance and his parking lot. As a result, one of his customers slipped on the way to his car, and he severely fractured his ankle in several places. The attorney for the business filed a Motion for Summary Judgment. If they were successful, the case for my client would have been dismissed. The attorney raised some very good issues. After several weeks of research and preparation, we contest the motion and were successful. Immediately thereafter, the business agreed to settle with my client for over six figures. In 2013, we had a client charged with Refusal, which is an offense that an individual will be charged with when they refuse to submit to a breathalyzer after being arrested of suspected DUI. After reviewing the case, we felt very strongly that we could have a successful defense on several issues. After some extensive case legal research, we were able to find some supporting law for our position. We drafted a legal brief and submitted it to the court. As a result of our work, the Refusal charge was dismissed.
How did you build a successful practice?
Ted Schiller and Perry Pittenger are the partners of this practice. They started the firm in 2001, and through hard work, proven success, and word of mouth through satisfied clients, they were able to grow their practice and add 10 additional attorneys in the last twelve years. At Schiller & Pittenger, our attorneys are friendly and attentive to our clients' needs.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Clients should look for someone who isn't going "bs" them but is going to tell them the truth. A good lawyer will tell you the truth and do the best work they can for you regardless. A good lawyer is available for their clients and always keeps them abreast of their case. A good lawyer gets the job done and gets it done right.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Having good, lasting relationships with court employees, judges, prosecutors and other attorneys is essential to having a successful practice. Our firm has been in Union County for thirteen years. Our attorneys know all the players, which helps us get good results for our clients.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
There is no limit. We regular take phone calls from prospective clients and talk about the facts of their case. We advise them of what we think their chances of success are, and we talk about how we would go representing them in their matter.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
Name, age, type of case you are calling about, phone number where we can reach you.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
We care about our clients and their cases. We treat each case as if it were our own and we were the client. We don't settle for anything but the best here, and we have hand selected each attorney. All of our attorneys are extremely experienced and knowledgeable. We all work together with one goal in mind - getting the best result for our clients.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
People say its not about winning and losing, but that is the way I treat it. I feel good when I get a ""win"" for my client and know that they are happy with my representation.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
We are very involved in the Scotch Plains Police Athletic League. We do all of their legal work for free and we volunteer as coaches for the football teams.
