I always suggest that a client not only hire an attorney, but the attorney you hire should have significant experience in the specific area of law you need help in. For example, if you need help on a family law case, make sure your attorney regularly handles family law cases. You don't want an attorney who is "dabling" in criminal law, doing it just to get the business or to try something new.

Hugely. Appearing in front of the same judges on a daily basis is extremely important. The judge is oftentimes your one juror. He or she is the one making the decisions on your case. So it is just good common sense for the attorney arguing before him/her to know the judge and have past knowledge of their tendencies, arguments they like and ones they dislike, even down to their mood on your day in court. We see out of town attorneys come into a court room not knowing anything about the judge and start to make an argument that we know this particular judge just rejects consistently, and sure enough, when the out of town attorney finally stops talking, the judge responds and certainly lets the attorney know that the argument failed.

I oftentimes spend as much as an hour in a free consultation, sometimes even a bit more. I ask some base line questions so I get enough preliminary facts and understanding of the client's situation. I will answer any specific questions and discuss the client's initial concerns or fears. I give my initial thoughts based on my years of experience and give an overview of what the process may look like. I will also discuss any hourly costs and rates and the payment plans we offer. If it is a personal injury or traffic accident case, I explain the contingency fee with no out of pocket costs to the client.
