Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I handled many cases last year but one sticks out in particular. The client was a female who was going through some mental issues when she began stealing items from a number of stores. In the process of my representation I was able to impart to the prosecuting attorneys in the various jurisdictions my client's mental health issues. This resulted in reduced charges in most cases and some dismissals in others. Having the clients health records and permission to share those records made the difference.
How did you build a successful practice?
Building a successful practice is no easy feat. Only through hard work, extensive experience in handling all types of crimes, and interacting on a personal level with each client has my practice (and reputation) risen to its current level.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
When searching to the right lawyer to handle your case there are a number of aspects to take into consideration. The lawyer's overall experience in the area of law concerned is probably the most important. However, a client should also gauge the attorney's dedication to the client. Many attorneys can talk very convincingly but do they really connect with the client. A strong attorney-client relationship is key to successful representation and satisfaction with the outcome of the case.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Local knowledge is important to the success of a case. There are certain advantages in knowing who the prosecutors and judges are. However, a good attorney is capable of handling any case in any jurisdiction to a favorable outcome for the client if they know the law and rules of evidence and procedures.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
During the initial free phone call my goal is to learn as much as possible about the case and the client. It is impossible to render any advice without knowing as much as possible. To do otherwise would put the client at a disadvantage in their case. A lawyer, like any doctor, wants to know as much as possible before rendering any opinions.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
My almost 30 years of experience provides my clients a vastly improved advantage in resolving their case. Some of my clients have been charged with the most serious of crimes imaginable, including some high profile cases with international interest. The expertise involved in those cases is applied to every client of mine and the results reflect that expertise.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Most people charged with violating a criminal law are really just everyday people. Unfortunately, being charged with a crime now puts them into a societal category they never expected to be in. It is extremely rewarding to help a person through this process and come out with their dignity and humanity intact.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
My off the job interests are dominated by my family and golf. I am very passionate about golf, even though I am not that great at the game
Are you involved in your community?
I am on the Board of Directors for the Second Chance Center. This organization is dedicated to helping individuals recently released from incarceration in finding jobs, education, housing, etc., all with the goal of the individual never returning to prison. Second Chance Center has been recognized in Colorado as the best run organization of its kind with the best results for its clients.
