Tariq El-Shabazz was such a bright light to enter my life when he did. He was training at Shuler’s boxing gym for a boxing match against Seth Williams. I was training with my boxing coach Chip Hart. I had an active case and felt completely uncomfortable with my representation at the time. Chip had referenced Tariq a few times while we were training (various days) ….see that man over there…he’s a real real good attorney. Which meant, he was a real real good attorney. At the time I’m pretty sure I hadn’t even told Chip about my case (didn’t want him worrying)… Two days before my hearing with my representation at the time…I walked into Shulers…walked up to Tariq, introduced myself, shook his hand and said, “I understand you are very good attorney.” “I have an active case. I have a hearing in two days and I do not feel comfortable with my current representation - would you be willing to represent me?” “And if so, can we meet at 6 am tomorrow?” “Also I have my case file in my truck, in the case you are willing to represent me, and would like it now.” “I believe he responded with, how about 8 am? - bring the case file with you tomorrow” That day represented a pivotal moment in my life. I will always be thankful that Tariq El-Shabazz entered my life and I truly look forward to witnessing his successes in the future.
