Plaintiff: Attorney for the plaintiff, Susan Bovell. Bovell claims that the defendant, CVS Pharmacy Inc., violated the Americans with Disabilities Act in August 2014. Bovell, who is legally blind, was hired by CVS as a cashier in June of 2013. Bovell alleges that after a change in management she began to be treated disparately. Her hours were reduced and the hours of the non-disabled cashiers were unaffected. She was then suspended on August 18, 2014 and ultimate terminated on August 28, 2014 for not being able to recognize counterfeit bills. Bovell claims she was never trained or taught how to detect the bills. Bovell is seeking damages of more that $150,000. This case is on going.
LANGFORD v GLOUCESTER TOWNSHIP POLICE DEPARTMENT
Attorney for the Plaintiff in an ongoing case in which said Plaintiff alleges that officers ignored evidence that she was being falsely accused of assault which led to said Plaintiff's arrest. Said arrest caused her to be held in custody for a month, on house arrest for a year, but charges were eventually dropped.
Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
I recently handled a wrongful termination/retaliation case and was able to secure a lucrative settlement during mediation after my client had been turned down by two other employment attorneys.
How did you build a successful practice?
The foundation to building a successful law practice is honesty and trust. Listen to the client to develop an understanding of their needs as well as their expectations for the representation. Frequently update the client and explain their legal options clearly. Be honest with the client as to whether their expectations can be met. I try to always keep the client grounded and refrain from puffery. In the long run, it benefits the attorney-client relationship when the client knows what to expect. Along with honesty comes knowledge.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Clients should seek out a lawyer who is willing to take time to speak with them, returns phone calls, responds to emails and is prepared to talk specifically about the client's matter when on the phone. Clients should seek lawyers who possess a depth of knowledge and breadth of experience in the particular legal area or specialty that applies to the client's problem. A client should ask specific questions and expect specific answers from their attorney.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
Local knowledge is very important. Familiarity with the local judges, rules and procedures for the courts virtually assures the efficient and expeditious resolution to a client's matter.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
I can usually assess a client's case and tell them whether they have a claim or not during an initial phone conversation, and if they have a claim, I can provide a timeline of events as to what to expect, fees and costs involved, the length of time before their matter would be finally resolved and I can also provide information on where to go, if I am unable to assist.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
During the initial phone consultation, I like having as much information as the client can provide. The more information a client provides, the more easily I can advise as to a solution to the problem. I like a client who sends documentation in support of their claims as well.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
Experience. I have tried cases to juries in both federal and state court. I have taken and participated in literally hundreds of depositions. I have handled dozens of arbitration and mediations and practiced before nearly every federal judge in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania and the United States District Court for New Jersey--Camden Vicinage. When a client is presenting their problem, they may rest assured in the knowledge that I have heard and dealt with similar issues and problems.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most rewarding aspect of my job is when I obtain a positive result for the client. Legal services is a results driven profession and that is a core value of our firm. When a client thanks me for helping them; when a client feels vindicated and feels as though they have been proven right (whether through a jury verdict or a settlement) that is the most rewarding aspect of the profession.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
My other interests are outdoor activities such as hiking, fishing, camping and playing golf. I am interested in environmental issues and the preservation of wild places and wilderness areas.
Are you involved in your community?
Both my wife, Daneen, and I volunteer at our children's school.
