About Hal

Hal Hanlin assists clients as a tax attorney with Callison Tighe & Robinson, LLC. He focuses his practice on planning estates and business transactions, including drafting wills, trusts, powers of attorney, living wills and health care powers of attorney, forming of various types of trusts, forming for-profit and non-profit corporations, limited liability companies and other entities. He also assists clients with buy-sell agreements, succession planning for their businesses, business reorganizations, spin-offs, split-offs, acquisitions and mergers.

Mr. Hanlin's experience includes:

*Advising clients on proper structuring of business and personal transactions for the best tax treatment. This includes advice and documentation for estate planning, probate administration, corporate planning and transactions, corporations and partnerships. Mr. Hanlin appears in court on behalf of his clients in these matters, and has represented clients in South Carolina Probate Courts, Circuit Court, Court of Appeals and Supreme Court.

*Arguing the following reported cases in the South Carolina Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, respectively: Kirkland v. Allcraft Steel Co., Inc., 329 S.C. 389, 496 S.E.2d 624 (1998); Lloyd and Ring's Wholesale Nursery, Inc. v. Long and Woodley Landscaping and Garden Center, Inc., 315 S.C. 88, 431 S.E.2d 632 (Ct. App. 1993).

*Trying several hundred cases before the South Carolina Workers' Compensation Commission.

Mr. Hanlin received a bachelor of science, cum laude, from Furman University in 1981. He earned his juris doctor from the University of South Carolina School of Law in 1989. As a law student, he was a Pupil of the John Belton O'Neall Inn of Court, Justice of Phi Alpha Delta Legal Service Fraternity and Captain of the Craven Moot Court Team. He is a member of the Order of Barristers. Mr. Hanlin returned to school to pursue his master of laws in taxation at the New York University School of Law, which he completed in 2002.

He is a member of the Columbia Tax Study Group, the South Carolina Bar and the Richland County Bar Association. Mr. Hanlin has been active in Washington Street United Methodist Church since 1987, serving as a Sunday School teacher for youth and adult classes, youth counselor, chairman of the Staff-Parish Relations Committee, and as chairman of its Board of Trustees, at various times. He also has worked with Boy Scouts of America and is an Eagle Scout.
