Questions & Answers
Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
Wright Commercial Litigation's goal is to deliver high quality legal service at a great value. That is done by being highly prepared for even the most routine matters since it is attention to detail that usually makes the difference. In the past year, the firm has helped individuals, small businesses, and select corporate clients reach favorable outcomes that include higher settlements than were initially thought possible by the client and decreasing the costs of litigation for defense clients. No further details can be shared in order to protect client confidentiality, which the firm takes seriously.
How did you build a successful practice?
The key to a successful practice for Wright Commercial Litigation is open, honest, and responsive communication. That includes informing a client upfront not only of the strengths but the weaknesses in their case and when it is the type of matter that can be handled more cheaply in other ways or without the expense of an attorney at all. The goal is always to save a client money such that they keep coming back when needed and pass along the firm\\\'s name to others by word of mouth.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Clients should look for a lawyer that is so focused on client service that they will not hesitate to say when the attorney's services are not needed or when they believe an effort is unlikely to be successful. It is hard to determine among all the advertising fluff what attorneys are focused more on service than profit, but a personal conversation with the lawyer can speak volumes. Your lawyer should not hesitate to refer you to others when better suited to your needs as well and encourage you to consult with other attorneys to give more options. Always keep in mind as well that what sounds too good to be true ... usually is exactly that.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
There is no doubt some benefit to having an attorney with significant experience before a particular judge or court, but it is not essential and should never be the deciding factor. The "facts" of a case control most matters and any number of competent attorneys can present them effectively in any jurisdiction or forum throughout the state. As such, local knowledge is by no means a requirement (unless, of course, you are an out-of-state attorney who needs local counsel in order to appear in Texas courts).
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
Wright Commercial Litigation offers free consultations on all matters and can typically provide an initial assessment of the strengths, weaknesses, and recommended approach based on a client's description alone. That is always given on a general informational basis and not as legal advice since the firm would ultimately have to review key documents to provide a fully-informed legal opinion, which requires the parties first enter into a formal written attorney-client relationship. Many potential clients, however, can benefit from the free initial consultation alone by being informed if their matter is one that may be handled without an attorney or is unlikely to be successful.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
Potential clients should be prepared to give a concise description of what happened so the firm can make an initial assessment, and, no less importantly, the potential client should also have a clear understanding of what they hope to achieve. Expectations can be, at times, unrealistic and it thus benefits all to be on the same page from the start as to what can reasonably be accomplished. It is always helpful as well for a potential client to have any key documents (such as the controlling contract) handy in order to answer questions which may turn out to be legally dispositive.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
Wright Commercial Litigation differs from other small practices is that the firm takes the time to listen closely and is focused always on minimizing costs. If hired, the firm investigates cases and researches the applicable law in detail before taking any other steps. Being able to back up allegations with solid research from the start engenders earlier resolutions at less time and cost. That benefits everyone.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The reward differs depending on the client. For corporate clients, Wright Commercial Litigation enjoys helping in-house counsel do their job more efficiently by handling litigation matters with a high degree of skill and at a lower cost than other options. For individuals and small businesses, the satisfaction comes from helping right a personal wrong or property loss, or help a good client get out of a bad situation. There is no better reward than gaining the trust and respect of someone who feels their money was well spent in a way that added value.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
The firm's principal attorney, Jason E. Wright--who holds an undergraduate degree in International Relations and has a prior history of military/government service--enjoys keeping up with international affairs, staying physically fit, still shooting a few rounds on occasion, and otherwise tagging along as his wife and three kids seek to experience every Disney attraction on the planet.
Are you involved in your community?
The firm contributes to the community the best way it knows how by accepting referral of pro bono legal matters on occasion from trusted resources, donating to select causes, and volunteering time by servicing on a community planning and zoning commission.
