About John

John D. Peterson is a native Oregonian. He was born in McMinnville in 1947, and graduated from North Salem High School in 1965. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Oregon State University in 1969, and obtained his Juris Doctor degree from Willamette University College of Law in 1973.

John started his law career in 1973 with Brink and Moore, a well-established law firm in Hillsboro, Oregon. He earned partnership with the firm in 1976. In 1995, John started his own practice and was joined in 2001 by his son and partner, Douglas.

For thirty-five years, John has engaged in the representation of clients in virtually all legal matters, giving him a broad range of experience in the field, and the wisdom and insight that comes with it. John has handled both civil and criminal trial cases in the state courts.

As a practicing attorney, it is important to John to keep up on new rules and regulations in the legal world. The Oregon State Bar Association sets minimum continuing educational requirements to keep Oregon lawyers current in their field. John has always exceeded these requirements, earning significant additional education above and beyond the set professional requirements. This assures his clients that he is current in his knowledge in the areas of law in which he practices.

John is very active in civic and charitable affairs in his community. He is a past president, vice-president and treasurer of the Washington County Bar Association. He is also a past president and vice-president of the Hillsboro Lions Club. John has been instrumental in the formation of several Hillsboro civic and charitable organizations, including providing services for the Hillsboro Tuesday Farmer’s Market and the Hillsboro International Air Show. He has assisted the Hillsboro Chamber of Commerce with its accreditation process and was elected to two four-year terms on the board. He was elected to the Hillsboro School Board in 2003 and is currently serving his second term. John was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Oregon School Board Association Health Insurance Trust, where he and his fellow board members designed health insurance plans, negotiated the premium and administered coverage for approximately 40,000 State of Oregon school employees.

John has narrowed his area of practice to concentrate on the representation of business needs, wills and estates, real estate law and divorce and family law. He has received as “AV” rating from the Martindale Hubbell Law Directory, the highest rating given for competency and adherence to ethical standards. He has authored continuing legal education articles for both the local and state bar associations. John also speaks at professional continuing education seminars for lawyers in training.

When he’s not addressing the demands of his busy practice or helping with the community, John enjoys spending time with his three children and his three grandchildren.

John brings this great wealth of education and experience to serving the needs of his clients, making Peterson & Peterson the best choice for your legal needs.
