John S. Economou is a registered patent attorney with over twenty-five years of legal experience. John spent eleven years of that time at Amster, Rothstein & Ebenstein in New York. John also worked at Conley and Hodge in Boston (in commercial litigation), at patent boutique Davidson, Davidson & Kappel in New York, as a sole practitioner with clients ranging from sole inventors to large aerospace corporations, and in partnership with Ira Silfin before forming Mandelbaum Siflin Economou LLP in 2018 with Howard Mandelbaum and Ira.

John has experience in a wide variety of intellectual property-related matters, including litigation, patent prosecution involving electronics hardware, software, electro-mechanical, telecommunications, image processing, semiconductor devices and business method patents, patent portfolio development, patent clearance searches, negotiating and drafting IP license agreements, advising on the IP aspects of corporate transactions and e-commerce and preparing patent infringement/validity opinions.

John also has experience working in a broad range of technologies, including bar code processing systems, microwave systems, RFID systems, and applications related to the use of RFID tags, motors, medical electronics, cargo shipping systems, telecommunications, semiconductor devices, digital video systems, digital to analog converters, computer software applications, image processing systems, and business methods.

John counsels technology-based companies and other enterprises in all aspects of intellectual property.  He has counseled prestigious consumer electronic companies in a number of different matters and has extensive experience in the resolution of matters through negotiation, mediation, alternative dispute resolution, and strategic licensing.  John was part of a team that defended a major global electronics manufacturer against separate assertions of patent portfolios involving analog and digital television technology, leading to favorable settlements in both matters; advised a major global electronics manufacturer in a mediation involving claims of patent infringement by automotive sensor technology leading to a favorable settlement, and provided portfolio development advice to a major global electronics manufacturer in the area of two-dimensional bar code technology.

John has worked closely with his clients over his legal career.  John’s engineering education and experience allow him to work with and easily communicate with engineers and inventors and to quickly grasp the construction and operation of products in a wide variety of technologies. John’s background also allows him to quickly identify legal issues relating to the client’s products. John has extensive experience in working with Japanese clients and understands how to meet their particular needs.

John has a Juris Doctor degree from Suffolk University Law School, and both Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. After graduating from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, John worked as a design engineer for over eight years, first at The Foxboro Company and later at Dynisco Instruments, designing analog and digital circuitry for industrial process sensors and systems.  John is admitted to practice before the New York and Massachusetts state bars and is licensed to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
