About Kelly
Kelly A. Smakal earned her law degree from the University of Arkansas School of Law in Fayetteville in December, 1996. During law school Ms. Smakal was on the Dean’s List, was a member of the Phi Delta Phi legal honor fraternity, the Student Bar Association and various other law school committees.
Since that time, Ms. Smakal has focused her practice exclusively on domestic and family litigation matters, including guardianship and adoption. She is a frequent speaker on divorce and family law topics at continuing legal education seminars and has been an adjunct clinical professor of law at the University of Tulsa’s Elder Law Clinic addressing probate and guardianship issues.

Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
Having been practicing exclusively in the areas of family law, to include guardianships and adoptions, as well as being a mother of two children myself, allows me to approach each and every case with years of experience and knowledge, as well as personal experience and knowledge, to come up with creative, practical and personalized solutions for my clients in these areas.
How did you build a successful practice?
I do not advertise, and the best way to build a successful practice is to do the best job you can for every client, and then those clients tell someone, and so on, and so on. Word of mouth is the best way to build a successful practice.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Clients should ensure that they feel comfortable with the lawyer they chose. They should feel that the lawyer is listening to them, and understands their situation and unique positions. A good lawyer should be able to listen to a client and be able to offer practical and legal advice and options tailored to each specific client, and be able to give good faith advice, even if it is not exactly what the client wants to hear - so long as it is honest and true advice based on the law and facts of the case.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
I think speaking to an attorney on the phone prior to an appointment can give you a good feel for the way the lawyer communicates, and their general knowledge of the law, and how they would handle your case.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
I do not have to meet a minimum billing requirement, so I am not churning my cases to bill the maximum amount of hours. At a smaller firm and/or with a solo attorney, you do not have to worry as much that a lawyer is doing as much as they possibly can to bill as much as possible on your case. Also, Smakal Munn is excellent at returning calls and emails, communicating with clients both prior to and after speaking with opposing counsel(s) or other third parties, and keeping clients fully informed.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most rewarding part of practicing family law, as well as guardianships and adoptions, is feeling like you helped someone, a child, and/or a family. In family law, as opposed to most other areas of law, we are helping and/or representing people with what they consider the most important thing(s) in their life, their children.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
In addition to practicing law, I am involved with my children's school as, among other things, a homeroom parent, the school cheer coach, and helping with track. I also enjoy spending time with my family, working out, running, and anything outdoors.
Are you involved in your community?
I am active and perform service hours at many different organization through the National Charity League of Mid-Town Tulsa.
