Gary Kollin cut his teeth working as a state prosecutor, public defender and chief of a state agency investigating Medicaid fraud.

Gary Kollin prosecuted 1,000s of felony cases while serving as a division chief in the State Attorney’s Office. As a public defender he represented hundreds charged with felonies as well as juveniles charged with all levels of crimes.

After trying hundreds of cases as a prosecutor and public defender, Gary Kollin became a chief of the Auditor General’s Medicaid Fraud Unit. He headed a unit which investigated doctors, pharmacists, nursing homes and other health care providers for cheating the public by stealing funds for the poor and disabled.

In 1987, Gary Kollin entered private practice. He took the years of experience in governmental practice and uses them to provide preeminent legal services.

In his criminal trial and appellate practice, he tried cases in the state and federal courts including first degree murder, drug trafficking and continuing criminal enterprises. He argued cases in the state and federal appeal courts.

He argued the case of Smith v. United States, 508 U.S. 223 (1993), in the United States Supreme Court. He was appointed by the United States Supreme Court to argue and brief the case.

Among his police misconduct cases he sued the Sheriff in a 220 person class action suit, Jones v. Sheriff, 9 Fla. Law Weekly Fed. D107 (S.D. Fla. 1995). The federal judge ruled that the sheriff illegally held acquitted defendants in jail after they were found not guilty. He won the case and the federal judge ordered the sheriff to pay over one million dollars.

GOTOWALA v. STATE

Attorney for the Appellant in a case in which said Appellant filed a petition to seal criminal records with a trial court and was denied. Said Appellant appealed on the grounds that the trial court did not conduct and evidentiary hearing. The higher court reversed the order and remanded the trial court to provide specific reasons, not generalizations for the denial.
