I am passionate about helping the disabled including U.S. military Veterans and others who are disabled. My father was a laborer and a farmer and a Korean War Veteran. He was my lifelong best friend and died in 2005. He was always available to help his neighbor, and I try to live up to his example. I do that, in part, through my work with disabled vets and other disabled people. I have a family member who was stricken with polio as a young child–one of its last young victims in our state in the late 1950’s. Growing up, I watched her deal with the resulting challenges. I have seen her overcome pain and discouragement. I witnessed her determination to walk when it was doubtful she would be able to do so; she could never run, but she defied the odds and learned to walk. When she received treatment at a Shriner’s Hospital, I remember seeing other kids in the waiting room who had all sorts of conditions and couldn’t live a “normal” childhood like me. When I became a lawyer over 20 years ago, I started handling disability cases before the Social Security Administration and the Veterans Administration. I quickly realized this is the work I was put on earth to do, and I know how important and life-changing it is.
I not only assist individual claimants; I also help other attorneys, non-attorney representatives, and accredited agents with their disability cases. I appeal cases at all levels, including at the federal courts. Some attorneys, reps, and agents refer their cases to me for federal court appeal after they’ve gone as far as they can; I handle the cases in federal court and then send them back to the referral source when the federal work is done. This is important because we can keep a case alive for someone and potentially help them eventually win the case and get more benefits than they otherwise would have received.
