Please describe a case in the last year or two where you made a big difference.
Cases: (a) Foster care and Day Care license: the county and the state agency determined that maltreatment of a child (hitting and causing bruises) occurred. After two day trial the licenses were re-instated, the finding of ""maltreatment"" was reversed and the license holders were able to continue helping children. (b) divorce/custody: The mother moved, without court permission, taking child with her. My client, father, got joint custody, 50% parenting time, no child support, and review of move. (c) criminal: my client, owner and operator of a car, was charged with possession with intent to sell cocaine. There were 3 passengers, none of which were charged. After 4 day trial my client was acquitted.
How did you build a successful practice?
My practice has thrived because I do for clients what I expect from an attorney I would hire if I had a legal crisis. My rate of success, through trial or settlement, is 85 per cent. Through word of mouth, primarily from previous clients and even opposing counsel, I have a successful practice with offices in two states and with extensive litigation experience in both state and federal courts, I have developed skills which devastate the other side.
What should clients look for in a lawyer?
Success, dedication, high level of trial skills, and someone who cares about how the result effects their client.
How important is local knowledge to the success of your cases?
I have litigated in over 40 states. It is helpful to have experience with the Judge(s) and local community members who may serve on a jury--and therefore I always tap into networks of local attorneys for advice. With 42 years of trial experience (and, having taught trial tactics to law students and lawyers) it does come down to the trial skills of the attorney who must always be prepared for all circumstances.
What information can you provide in a free phone consultation?
Often times I can direct people to ways in which they can save attorneys fees...either doing the work themselves ( with my coaching) or with less experienced attorneys ( who charge less) if my level of skill is not needed. If their problem is complex/serious risk of loss of a child, freedom, or profession, I can give well experienced projections on different courses of conduct which helps formulate a plan for action.. I can also usually provide reasonable projections of costs. If the client needs help they will not get off the phone without clear guidance.
What information do you need in a free phone consultation?
Type of case, court where matter is pending, copies of documents/pleadings which can be emailed or faxed to me so that my opinion is informed as to the details necessary to understand the scope of case and formulate plans. Whether they are already represented and what stage of the proceeding the case is in. I also can provide access to free legal forms and their use...in other words,to help them determine whether they can proceed or at least do the basics for documents to save them money.
What differentiates you from other lawyers in your community?
The dedication to the client and availability to respond when they are in crisis. My success rate in litigation also helps since the other side knows that if I cannot achieve what my client wants with settlement, I will go to trial and I will win it there. If I lose at trial, I will appeal and often win reversals in appellate courts. Many see me as a ""bull dog"" litigator.
What is the most rewarding aspect of your job?
The most rewarding aspect of my job is when I obtain justice for my clients. Unfortunately, the system is not always fair and the variabilities in the judge and opposing counsel makes accomplishing justice difficult, but not unreachable.
What are your other interests in addition to law?
My family, friends, well being and safety of children, golf, music, world affairs and charitable giving.
Are you involved in your community?
I live in two states but always strive to connect and contribute to my communities through giving of advice, donations, and community organizing for betterment of the communities and society at large.
